Arlington has a list of “priority trails” that it clears. It does not clear every trail. In theory these are the ones most likely to be used for transportation. I think we’re about at the point we need to talk about adding the Washington Blvd Trail to the list as well as at least a portion of the Arlington Blvd Trail.
chris_sParticipantI like my Banjo Brothers Grocery Panniers. I’ve had them for over a decade, frequently load them with an absurd amount of weight, and they basically look brand new. They’re 13″ x 8″ x 11.5″
chris_sParticipantThank you for the very clear instructions!
September 26, 2023 at 1:57 pm in reply to: Status on tunnel to & trail thru Nat Gaurd Training Center? #1126887chris_sParticipantThe plan (circa 2017/2018) was for public access to the tunnel beneath George Mason Drive to be provided (see below). I haven’t tried to use it & haven’t heard any updates on whether that was implemented.
“DOS will provide public access to the pedestrian tunnel under George Mason Drive. Currently, NFATC fencing along the sidewalk prohibits access to the tunnel on both the eastern and western sides of George Mason Drive. Pulling back the fencing to allow tunnel access from the sidewalk along the eastern side of George Mason Drive would allow pedestrians to safely cross this busy road (Figure 15). DOS will move the fence back to allow access to the tunnel from the sidewalk. A new trail will be constructed between the sidewalk and the existing trail, providing paved trail connectivity.”

While we are necromancing this thread, interesting that this last idea is what is actually to be implemented. But I was wrong about the lead agency, it’s the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority.
In your defense, VPRA didn’t exist in 2015

Probably the most useful connection is the proposed extension of the Four Mile Run Park Trail. The trail is proposed in the “Arlandria-Chirilagua Small Area Plan” https://media.alexandriava.gov/content/planning/ArlandriaChirilaguaSAPEnglishCurrent.pdf. Unfortunately, timing is dependent on redevelopment of the properties along Four Mile Run
I’d use the heck out of a connection that just got me from the bridge to Valley Drive without dealing with that West Glebe Traffic.

Join Arlington County and the City of Alexandria for a special celebration of the West Glebe Road Bridge completion and the opportunity to meet artist Vicki Scuri at this dedication event! Driving, biking or walking will reveal a series of graduating arcs and bubble patterns that enhance the experience of crossing this newly renovated bridge. The design encourages people to slow down, appreciate their surroundings, and reflect on the natural beauty of Four Mile Run.
When: Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2:00 p.m.
Where: Pizza Hut Parking Lot, 1049 W. Glebe Rd., Alexandria, VA 22305
This event will be held outdoors. In the case of inclement weather, the event will move into the Pizza Hut.

If there was some spot that had as many car accidents with people injured as the various wooden bridges, the Park Service would fix it.

PS I think there used to be something called rackspotter, but it doesn’t seem to be alive any more…? Is the data now embedded in some other app?
Until Rackspotter comes back up (it’s down for upgrades) a somewhat-recent cut of the Rackspotter data is embedded in https://dcbikemap.com/2.html
It will appear once you’ve zoomed in somewhat close to an area.

Feel free to drop any comments about BTWD here, including the single plastic wraps on the shirts. Last year’s cluster (shorting the entire order) was replaced with a new cluster (small sizing, shrinking shirts, wasteful plastic) and we will share with the overlords at MWCOG.
I think BTWD really needs a re-work for next year in the facing of our changing transportation landscape:
– Rename it to Bike to Anywhere Day or Ride Your Bike Day or something. The 9-5 commute paradigm is broken.
– Move it off of Friday, the day of least in-person office attendance.chris_sParticipantMy understanding is that the BID is taking the resources previously put into Bike to Work Week & doing a number of bike-related events throughout Bike Month instead including an organized ride and an end of month happy hour.

When I rode by here last week, I noticed that subtle rise in the middle of the path/sidewalk. Is that the dividing line between pedestrian sidewalk and bike path?
Yes. The side closer to traffic will be green-ified and marked with bike symbols, I believe.

I rode it this AM. I can’t see many occasions when it would really be a useful route for me. I don’t need to get to the Rte 1 east side sidewalk very much, either north or south of here. Easier ways to get to Potomac Avenue in either direction. It seems mostly useful for people accessing the park itself from the 4MRT. OTOH if and when there is any kind of connection, official or unofficial, through the park to Potomac Avenue (I did not check that out this AM) that could be useful.
A connection to Potomac Ave / Potomac Yard Trail will be added when the park is built.

chris_sParticipantYou’d think after what happened to this guy last year people would think twice about this kind of nonsense.
