To be honest, I just take the lane in both directions underneath the Whitehurst. The PBL is not worth the trouble due to encroachments from car drivers and inattentive pedestrians. I like to have room to maneuver when the feces inevitably hits the fan.

That’s smart if you have any desire to go through there quickly. That whole stretch of road is chaos whether on a bike or in a car and the two-way PBL has significantly increased the complexity of the traffic pattern. I mostly use the PBL but take it slowly, and skip it altogether and use the boardwalk on “bad” weather days when there aren’t many pedestrians about.

Terribly sorry to hear. I hope you are able to get some clarity on what happened.

    Best wishes for your recovery.

Noted, thanks! I will resist opining on the relative merits of Twitter vs blogs, but I do hope some of the archive-worthy, long-form posts return.

Thanks — this is helpful. I was confused about the status of the trail and had expected it to open along with the new express lanes. I guess it will continue to be a patchwork for a while.

Of all the bike orgs and blogs in the area, FABB’s website is among the most useful. (Not sure what happened to WashCycle but that has also been a true gem).

Saw one of these being ridden in the wild on the MVT last night but didn’t have time to see if I could find one to ride. They all have the new seatpost quick release handle which is pretty nice since I often struggle with adjusting the seat. The seatposts also go to 11 instead of 10.

They are really nice — I’ve ridden them a few times now and they are a different beast from the previous (black) model. The assist is strong and smooth. Unlike the older model, I don’t think there’s a way to turn it up or down. Just mash the pedals and go. It’s almost like being on a scooter rather than a bicycle. Even going uphill, I found my heart rate didn’t go up much. Estimated range seems to be around 30mi.

Sunsetting of the Dark Sky API (i.e., access to our weather data) is now extended to the end of March, so that’s a potential tech headache lifted for this year. (And hopefully Apple’s follow-on to it, WeatherKit, will be suitable for future BAFS editions without too much fiddling)

Thanks for posting, Steve. The information I received this morning states that the ride will depart the Kiss & Ride at 10:15am, with a speech at 10:45 and ghost bike installation at 11am.

You may want to leave a little earlier than 9:45 to make the speech, depending on how fast you plan to ride!

    Here’s the note in full:

Bikers should arrive at the Kiss-and-Ride parking lot of the Bethesda metro station before 10:15, from which they will ride to the location of the accident at 5244 River Road in Bethesda. The ride will begin shortly thereafter, proceed along the Capital Crescent Trail and end at the site. Participants not biking can also join at the site. Parking is limited. Remarks and the placement of a white Ghost bike will take place at 11:00 am. A Police presence will direct traffic in order to protect participants on River Road near the accident location.

I saw the aftermath of that and wondered what had happened — worse than I could have imagined. Second State Dept staffer killed on bike in as many months. Both by right-turning trucks.

Thanks, but I won’t bother filing a report. The entire street and bike lanes need to be swept from Montana Ave. to Florida. (Probably by hand, thanks to the ubiquitous flexi-bollards.) Heaven forbid that one agency could oversee street maintenance. Additionally, the lanes are too narrow. A bike infrastructure fail.

Please submit a report. 311 has been responsive when I’ve done it, and I think they have specialized smaller street sweepers for the bike lanes.

The new Malcolm X Shared-Use Path (1.3 miles) in Washington is now open.

Thanks for the update! Please excuse my ignorance of that part of the city, but for folks who don’t otherwise have business there, does it make any recreational rides easier? (E.g., looking at the map it appears it could make it nicer to get from Navy Yard to Oxon Run)

ElevationLab, which makes accessories for Apple Products, has announced a nondescript way to attach an AirTag to your bicycle using the bottle cage mounts. $20. Use code BIKE to get 20% off. I have a couple of their products and they seem well-designed and well-built.

Please take care: the lanes on Virginia Ave are still under construction. Flexposts/concrete barriers have yet to be installed along the entire corridor and, more importantly, signals are not yet installed/operational. It’s usable-ish right now if you’re very confident and brave, but I would not recommend it to people until it’s done this spring.

Great to know there are plans to signalize it and install barriers. It is pretty dodgy at the moment.
