Ah, true. I switched out all my square tapered but went to 10 speed from 7/8 speed.

Yes, I expect this bicycle will eventually make its way to my folks’ house in Minnesota for use during my winter and summer visits. Drivetrains with fewer cogs tend to be more reliable in snowy & icy conditions, so that’s my excuse for not diving into a 10 or, heaven forbid, 11-speed conversion. Plus, 7-speed components are much less expensive!

Historians will recognize this piece as the inflection point at which Freezing Saddles could be said to be fully imbued with the spirit of late capitalism, and a clear indication of our irreversible decline into decadence.

However, I do think maybe I will organize a W&OD brewery ride a little later in the competition to hit up some of the outer breweries in VA. Stayed tuned for more detail on that later this month!

    I would certainly join that.

There’s a new, superhero-themed brewery opening in Woodbridge tomorrow. Heroic Aleworks. A quick Google search suggests there are at least three other breweries in Woodbridge: Ornery, Growling Bear (that’s two separate breweries!!), and Brew Republic. I’ve never been down there. A group ride south might be in order, as well.

Thanks very much for the suggestions, everyone!

If your chainrings are shot, its probably cheaper to just buy a new crank rather than multiple chainrings.

Do you have an integrated bottom bracket? If you have cup and cone, it’s just easier to replace it with an integrated BB than to try to adjust it.

I’m not sure, because I’ve never been in there, myself. But the research I’ve done suggests that it’s probably integrated. Good to know that I can install an integrated BB even if it’s currently cup-and-cone style.

In the end, I’ll probably install new cranks and purchase a BB with the spindle length suggested by the specs for the cranks. If that means more involved derailleur adjustments than I’ve done previously, so be it!

Why would you replace the cranks? What’s wrong with the old ones?

Ha, I have asked myself the same question. In truth, I probably don’t need to. I got it in my head because a mechanic once mentioned it was possible that the chainrings couldn’t be replaced without also replacing the cranks. Apparently some cheaper bikes were like that once. I doubt that’s the case for the Shimano components on this bike.

Thanks for all your work on this. I don’t mind walking a few blocks, or even many blocks.

Good thread! I’ve enjoyed reading these. Here are mine:

    2016

First bikepacking trip: 3 days on the Greenbrier River Trail in WV
Rode to Harper’s Ferry and took the Amtrak back
Rode on the VA side of the river for the first time (thanks to the Boat Lights ride)
Explored places in DC I never would have gone but for bike infrastructure
Rode around 1,500 mi, mostly commuting
Didn’t loose my cool with bad drivers

    2017

Bikepack from Cumberland to DC (I have set dates for this!)
Spend more time riding in NoVa
Not let the rain deter me from bike commuting
Bike more with friends, new and old
    Go clipless
    n + 1 = 2
    Overhaul my hybrid
    Ride 3,000 mi
    Coffeneuring. Beerneuring.

They’re slowly making progress on this. Why they don’t just do the whole thing at once, I have no idea. Some sections were perfectly clear this morning. In one place, the track was entirely covered with leaves. The leaves are not really a problem at the moment, but they will be if they get wet and freeze… yuck!

This is my first year commuting on 15th, so I’ll be curious to see how aggressively the track is cleared of snow and ice in the winter. The city overall seems to take a pretty lax approach even to roads (maybe because things usually melt off in a few days), so my expectations aren’t high.

To the driver who crossed to my side of a quiet residential street near the Maryland line in order to charge at me, headlights off, before veering away and blowing a stop sign: your behavior was so weird that I wasn’t scared, or even annoyed, just bemused.

Traveling from the north, RCPT is basically not open south of Klingle. No idea if one can get further if starting from the south (assuming the cops don’t stop folks on bikes).

There’s quite a lot of work on this section of trail, so there may be some unevenness in signing and, indeed, whether it is open. But I haven’t had trouble since construction began. It was open on Sunday evening, albeit with a diversion onto the road.

Sam here. Thanks for leading, Judd. The boats were cooler than expected, and Bob gave a few of us a nice tour of new bike infrastructure (e.g., the Potomac Yard Trail) to kick off the ride home.

I’ll be in Minnesota for the first two weeks of my first FS. Boot camp!

Works great, thank you! I use Google Calendars anyway, so I just had to hit the little “+ Google Calendar” icon in the lower right to add it to my list of calendars.
