ParticipantIt’s easy to cross the parkway there to get up to the Harvard Street bridge. There is a crosswalk with a HAWK signal, but the sidewalk up to Harvard Street does have a sharp bend which could be difficult with a tandem.

ParticipantThe proposal calls for modifying the trail at the south ramp
The south onramp onto northbound GWMP near the Airport Access Road (SR-233) bridge would be
widened to provide additional merging distance. This may require a minor shift of the Mount Vernon
Trail and the Mount Vernon Trail would be widened slightly. A safety barrier may be installed between the
widened GWMP onramp and the realigned trail. The Mount Vernon Trail crossing of the south GWMP
onramp would be enhanced with lane markings and signage, including rapid flashing beacons, to improve
safety for trail users. The potential for a future grade-separated crossing is under consideration. Light
poles in the vicinity of the onramp would be realigned and replaced in accordance with NPS GWMP
design standards.DCAKen
ParticipantAs of this morning, Rock Creek Park still has one downed tree completely blocking the trail just south of the Massachusetts Avenue bridge. You can get around it on the grass. The zoo bypass was still closed this morning, so you still have to use the tunnel. There are two other trees down that only partially block the trail (near the Q Street Bridge and between the zoo entrance and Porter Street)

ParticipantSunday’s crash finally prodded the NPS into repairing the railing at the north end of the bridge. That had been taken out by a car driving down the trail(!) and off the bridge several month ago. The south end still has a section of railing missing from another car incursion, but that’s not as hazardous.

ParticipantI was wondering why there was a Cabi left on the side of the trail just above that bridge this morning, looking like it was recently in the creek.

ParticipantI’ll usually take the lane heading southbound when the gates are closed.

A spring equinox miracle? I rolled up on the infamous “Zoo Loop” trail about 6:30 last night (Mon, 3/20) to find the gates open. Is this a one-time fluke, or is it now policy, aka summer hours? The signs still say “7 am to 5 pm.”
The first time I noticed them open late was on the day Eleanor Holmes Norton held a town hall meeting with the NPS. They’ve been kept open after 5 pm many times now. One night last week, since I was so used to them being closed on my commute home, I went through the tunnel before noticing the gates were still open. They’re usually opened by 6:30 am, in addition.
