DCAKenParticipantI have a pair of Ortlieb Back Packers that I’ve been using for well over a decade. They’re sturdy!
DCAKenParticipantI use the PitLocks skewers since I have a Schmidt generator in my front hub. The key has a hole in it, so it fits on my keychain. The nice thing about that is the key ring gives me enough leverage to tighten or loosen the Pitlock in most cases. It’s pretty rare that I have to take the key off the ring and use it with a wrench.

Why not plant blackberry bushes? Spiky, and provide snacks for summer rides!
Until you imagine all the people stopping on the trail to pick a blackberry…
DCAKenParticipantI call out “Passing Left” to every person or group I pass on the trails. However, I don’t generally call out when the runner/walker is off the pavement. The other day, a woman who was running in the dirt path next to the Rock Creek trail decided to suddenly jump back onto the pavement just as I was passing. After hearing her mutter “Jackass”, I was tempted to stop to ask her why she didn’t look around before hopping back on the pavement and whether she drove the same way, changing lanes without looking. But I let it slide…
I also have the habit of shouting “Stay to the right!” to people who are walking/running/cycling on the wrong side.

DCAKenParticipantOn my commuter bike, I have the Schmidt dynohub and I love it. I’ve been using it for about four years now and haven’t had any problems with it. My first one was a regular hub, then I bought a bike with disk brakes and switched to the hub that has the fittings for the disk. I use the Inoled Extreme light with a very good cutoff pattern. The only problem I’ve run into has been with the on-off switch, so I have just left it on at all times. Since it’s an LED light, I don’t have to worry about a bulb burning out. It’s a pricey setup, to be sure, but it’s been well worth it. No worry about batteries dying mid-ride. I also went with Pitlock skewers to prevent wheel theft.

DCAKenParticipantTake a look at this posting over in Greater Greater Washington. The car must merge into the bike lane when turning right.
DCAKenParticipantIt turned out to be a gorgeous morning for the ride. I did the 31 mile loop and really enjoyed the portion of the route after the midpoint rest stop that went down Oaklyn Drive and Persimmon Tree. That was a well paved, fast segment of the ride and it felt like I was the only one who took that route instead of going back past Great Falls park. That soup was delicious afterward!

As I was fixing a flat on the Georgetown Branch today (sigh…at least I can now change a tire without crying…too much), I was admiring my Blackburn AirStik for its handiness…for the first 50 pumps. After that, I fiercely wish that I had forearms like Popeye. I’m not saying my pump’s days are numbered, but what recommendations do you have for a Schrader/Presta compatible replacement? I could use a pump with a gauge and don’t think I’d do well with CO2 cartridges (I’d just use them to make bubbly martinis or something). Thanks for your thoughts.
Was that you I passed last night? When I asked if everything was OK, the cyclist (you?) replied that he was able to fix it without crying.
DCAKenParticipantI have ridden with SPDs for over a decade, but decided to give Egg Beaters when they came installed on my new commuter bike. I was quickly sold on the new pedals…they didn’t leave me with the same numb spot that I had gotten used to with the SPDs.
DCAKenParticipant4) I love the chattering animals in the National Zoo in the early morning
DCAKenParticipantWABA announced the 2012 Vasa Ride for March 4th, with warm blueberry soup after the ride at the House of Sweden in Georgetown.
DCAKenParticipantI have an Inoled Extreme light hooked up to my hub dynamo. What I really like about this light is how it has a well projected beam. It puts lots of light on the ground in front of me but there’s a pretty sharp beam cutoff so it’s not blinding people coming the opposite way.
DCAKenParticipantOK, I’ll finally post something after lurking for months
