The narrative says the MUP will be separated from traffic by parked cars.
There will only be buffering from parked cars at the current angled spaces, which are going to be converted to parallel parking.

ParticipantEncouraging cyclists to salmon seems like a really, really bad idea. The original options didn’t show that, IIRC.

So, the gate at the 41st St S turn had been lumberjacked open on Sunday–thanks, I was prepared to do so myself. Coming back up, a guy in front of me tried the S turn anyway and fell over on the second turn at the makeshift water pipe with plastic ramps. He fell into the railing but was alright. I was circling below to give him space and went straight up. Lots of wet leaves now and slipped a couple of times, even with a gravel bike, but redistributed the weight a bit and didn’t fall. I think this would be impassable at the moment on a road bike unless your name is Peter Sagan.
I’d rather take the lane on Glebe Rd. (uphill) than deal with that nonsense.

ParticipantWest Potomac Park at the south end of the Rock Creek Trail.
The Park Service (or its contractor) tore out the temporary trail bypass around the beach volleyball courts and replaced it with sod. That leaves only the “single-track” dirt/mud desire path. Kind of baffling since the trail is still (!) closed through the volleyball courts and shows no signs of re-opening soon.

ParticipantSeems like they “fixed” the wrong connection. You know, one that would involve getting rid of those godawful switchbacks with a direct connection from Potomac Ave to the 4MRT. On the other hand, they are an “opportunity” to practice your slow-speed handling skills…

I suggest we meet at Powers Brewing after the ride/lunch as Warthog is impossibly busy. Also, they have delicious kombucha in addition to beers. Thoughts?
Wort Hog is permanently closed, as of Feb. 2022.

Alexandria: Holmes Run Trail is closed at the Telegraph Road underpass where crews are replacing large sections of the concrete. I expect this will likely be passable in as couple days but right now it’s not.
Where does the Holmes Run Trail pass under Telegraph Rd? Duke St or Eisenhower perhaps? Those are the only street/highway underpasses on the HRT.

ParticipantZoo loop bridge over Rock Creek Park opens today at 3 pm. However, the daylight-only opening hours will be in effect for the Zoo Loop trail that bypasses the tunnel. Still have to use the preposterously narrow sidewalk (or take the lane..).

ParticipantVDOT spokesperson says the impact to “locals should be ‘minimal.'” I wonder if VDOT includes more than motorists in the curious locution “locals.”
Three-four days per week this is my commute route, so I’ll have a front row seat. The intersection of the ramps with Long Bridge Drive is a shitshow, so this will is a long overdue and welcome change. Not to mention completion of the “missing link” trail to the south end of the Humpback.

ParticipantRidiculous if the county pre-approved this. I get the feeling there’s just an “anything goes” attitude when it comes to work associated with “National Landing.”
I’ve submitted several tickets about steel plates covering utility trenches on Crystal Drive south of 18th. They’re often placed at odd angles to the direction of travel, not spiked down, and there are no asphalt edge “ramps.” All at odds with best practices. Several times I’ve noted multiple plates stacked. Easy enough to spot during the day I suppose, but a hazard for the unwary, those riding at night, or in the rain.

Note the tape blocking the trail has been broken and there is a dog walker just about out of sight towards KensingtonHand-lettered signage is always the hallmark of quality.

ParticipantThe County is reducing the street width and adding a speed table (doubles as a raised crosswalk.) Not only much safer for trail users but smooths out the annoying “dip.”
August 1, 2022 at 4:32 pm in reply to: Arlington claims to ticket those blocking the bike lane #1121779arlcxrider
ParticipantSame story on Crystal Dr. Occasionally they put up a variable message display warning drivers not to block the bike lanes. Once in a great while I’ll see ACPD there, presumably writing tickets (or issuing verbal warnings.)
I’ve given up trying to use bike lanes in either location. Crystal Dr. a complete clown show, with double-parked cars and drivers jockeying for position, and the occasional U-turn from the northbound lane, just for extra thrills. Luckily it all happens at low speed, so likely to be more annoying than lethal.
Another LOL variable message display is on Rt 110, adjacent to Arlington Cemetery bike path. “NO LOUD MUFFLERS. IT IS THE LAW!” I’m sure that’ll snap the scofflaws into compliance.

ParticipantIt’s a hopeless muddle and largely unenforceable. Who knows what the legislature was trying to accomplish, other than provide a ham-handed response to some constituent complaints about being “blocked” by cyclists on narrow roads.
