    We’re still waiting on the replacement of the bridge at the north end of Lubber Run Park that was declared “structurally unsound” in late 2018 and closed to foot and bicycle traffic. In an ironic turn of events, it’s the only footbridge in the park to have survived the deluge on July 8, 2019. “Sometime” this spring, we’re told.

    Yeah, like reducing street cleaning to three times a year.

    Many of the flexi-bollards are coming loose on the Pershing PBL east of Washington Blvd. No one seems to care (or notice). The Quincy PBL is on my regular route, and is a sad joke. I’ve started using the regular traffic lanes southbound. Between the Residence Inn, the Domino’s Pizza franchise, and the Mercedes dealer, there’s always some sort of blockage to contend with.

    I have not read the test of the bill, but if it does not make this a primary offense, meaning that someone can be pulled over and tickets solely for this act, it will only serve as an add on as a result of some other offense and will likely have limited to no effect on the actual use of a phone while driving.

    Agreed. A lot of these feel-good “distracted driving” statutes clutter up the statute book and are largely unenforceable.

    Going down from P St, the ramp can be a little bit of a white-knuckle experience if you’re on it during the evening rush contraflow period. Essentially you’re playing chicken with oncoming northbound traffic coming off the Parkway. Drivers aren’t expecting cyclists. My (very unpopular among drivers in NW DC) opinion is they should do away with the reversible lanes on the RCP, but it’ll probably never happen.

    The Jogger’s Soliloquy (recited to me as I passed her, after ringing my bell, on the Custis near the Bridge to Nowhere):

    “Why do you ring your bell when I am clearly in the right lane…(inaudible due to distance)”

    To make sure you know I’m passing and you stay to the right.

    Unlike the runner who pulled a 180 right in front of me on the W&OD last summer. I dinged the bell and followed it up with a “passing left”–she cut me off anyway, account earbuds… A minor crash, with some road rash as swerved hard, but I could ride away. No damage whatsoever to the other party.

    They griped about a light during the DAY?

    I find another cyclist’s headlight too bright or dazzling at night, I cover mine. That usually gets the message across without any Sturm und Drang.

    A few icy spots on my neighborhood streets at 8:30, but otherwise good. And the usual frozen run-off on the Ft. Myer / Rt. 50 trail.

    I was almost right-hooked there (Lee Hwy. and Oak) last week. I had the walk signal westbound, driver had a red arrow, but made the turn anyway, without stopping. The sign says “no turn on red.” In other places I’ve seen “no turn on red” with a red arrow below, to make it clearer.

    Another bad intersection on my normal commute routes is Pershing and Arlington Blvd. Lots of drivers blaze through a right-turn-on-red without stopping first (or even slowing very much). It’s a trouble spot that could use some police enforcement. Dedicated right turn lanes seem to present an “attractive nuisance” to a certain sub-set of inattentive and aggressive drivers.

    Thanks for the update. And it appears Strava reports distance data at an absurd level of precision.

    There’s a 10 point bonus per ride day.

    I already figured that in, with the “base” total of 65 for the first ten miles, per the FAQ (see below). It seems like the scoring system is awarding one additional point for each mile, not one additional point for each mile over ten as described above.

    Cheat Sheet for the Mathematically Challenged
    Miles = Points
    1 = 20
    2 = 29
    3 = 37
    4 = 44
    5 = 50
    6 = 55
    7 = 59
    8 = 62
    9 = 64
    10 = 65
    11 = 66…

    Take my current score of 196, covering two days of riding, total of 66 miles. 65 + 65 + 66 = 196.

    Does any of this really matter? Maybe I should just go for a ride and forget about the forensic accounting. :D

    I did two rides yesterday for a total of 53 miles, and was awarded 118 points. Still trying to figure out where the “extra” ten points came from. 65 + 43 = 108…
