I’ll be there, and it’s on my calendar.

    Sounds good. I’m in.

Not a place for the unwary, or casual users of the W&OD for whom the detour is a surprise. It was also the first “nice” weekend day since the detour commenced.

In the interest of science, I checked out the official Banneker “detour” area yesterday, and took a short break to observe the goings-on. In the few minutes I was there–admittedly a small sample–not one westbound cyclist (including a father with two children) used the Protected Bike Lane westbound on 19th St. They crossed the on-ramp, crossed Sycamore and then proceeded up the hill on the right-hand side of the road past the Metro Kiss’n’Ride entrance on 19th. The signage and pavement marking definitely need improvements.

Not only is the Strava data from Strava users (obviously) it’s from a further subset of Strava users who allow use of their data. Allowing access to “Metro” and “Heatmap” is in the Strava privacy settings.

Or maybe that the road changes from Columbia to 16th at some point along the route?

    Yes, at the county line.

I agree with using Columbia to avoid the whole mess, if you’re continuing west on the W&OD. On Columbia there’s a light at Washington that’s on a timed cycle–no beg button or dodgy pavement loops.

I’ve been doing that since the detours for the Lee Hwy. bridge went up. The handling of that detour and the Banneker Park detour have been pretty dismal, in my opinion. Not to mention the attenuated schedule for both of these projects. I’ve seen very little visible progress on the Lee Hwy. bridge since the steel went up.

In my opinion, bike horns–unless it’s akin to a Nathan five-chime locomotive air horn–are all but useless with other vehicles, and just adds to the cacophony. For pedestrians and other cyclists, my “outdoor” voice works pretty well.

Arlington DPR is usually pretty good about responding. Just let them know–they’re not clairvoyant.

Plead guilty to that too. Cruising north on Hayes St. at a decent clip, through the light at Army Navy only to realize (almost) too late that beyond the light lies 395 and only 395…

Yeah, looked like they did some survey work or utility marking yesterday…planning for a detour tonight.

The county’s “official” detour involves two beg buttons, etc. I think I’ll continue crossing Roosevelt at 16th St, which becomes Columbia St in Falls Church.
