rode a splendid Protected Bikeway to the Kennedy Center.
It’s a very useful PBL. But, the section from Rock Creek Parkway to the Watergate has no flexposts. Totally fine going uphill (toward Foggy Bottom) but the two times I’ve taken it the other way (downhill) I have had cars turn in front of me (including twice yesterday!). Drivers are definitely not expecting counterflow traffic. I think I will continue to use the traffic lanes when heading from Foggy Bottom toward the boathouse and Georgetown.

ParticipantMoCo portion of the CCT is in good shape. Not sure about the DC portion.
DC downtown bike lanes seem highly variable but overall not in great shape — passable with caution?

ParticipantI could potentially fit into this, depending on the week. Count me in!

ParticipantMy risk tolerance is fairly high but I would have skipped this one.

ParticipantIt’s nice to rotate through the options. I now have a fun collection of BAFS things. I will say the one that is most recognizable and gets the most comments is the green tag that hangs from my saddle.

ParticipantDo you plan to build this yourself?
Please post a spec list and any lessons learned when you’re done. I didn’t know there were off-the-shelf frames with split chainstays. Looks like there’s a lot of bike commuting in my future and I’d consider a build like this when & if I decide to replace the Space Horse.

You mean kitten-like meat, right?
I think the Friendship Heights Whole Foods carries kitten-like meat.

ParticipantBy May 2022, the Metro extension to IAD should (!) be open. You’ll be able to easily get most anywhere in the city from the airport. If your budget allows, you could consider staying somewhere central like Dupont Circle. Good walking, bike, and transit connections to all the sights, and easy enough access to the trails.

ParticipantHope to see a few forum folks at the GRUSK this coming weekend. Bought a pair of WTB Resolutes (700C x 42) for the ride. I had to switch my registration to the Tall (1-day) but am excited to ride the new course!

ParticipantAll good points, though my read of the liability coverage from rental car companies is that it covers these scenarios — e.g., the coverage from Hertz is $1 million, and includes under-insured coverage.
That said, if you find that non-owners insurance makes sense for you, please post what you’ve learned about the advantages of it and which company you went with.
Edit: Also, I realize that some options like car sharing services may provide more limited coverage than the big rental car companies.

ParticipantMy recollection when I ran the numbers was that I’d need to rent a lot to make it worthwhile. I’ve settled on Allianz for collision coverage by the day (in theory, collision should be covered by my credit card company but I don’t trust them to pay up) and just go with the supplemental liability offered by the companies at rental time.

Curious about using the dockless option on CaBi ebikes at the airport. Were you dinged the $25 fee for parking the bike in a exclusion zone?
I don’t think so and I hadn’t realized DCA was an exclusion zone. The bike’s battery died toward the end of the trip, though, so it’s possible that CaBi was forgiving about the docking location.

ParticipantI’ve biked to/from DCA maybe 3 times for personal travel: once I locked up my beater bike at the racks for a 3-4 days without issue, once (prior to the new CaBi station) I used the dockless option on an e-CaBi one way and took Metro back, and I’ve used the new CaBi station for one round-trip. From Mt Pleasant it takes 25-40 mins to reach the airport depending on time of day and choice of bike. Exercise is a great way to start a day of travel and the bone-dry cabin air takes care of any sweat very quickly!
Last time I did this, I wore my 40 liter backpack duffel and strapped a small backpack to the front of the e-CaBi. Worked fine, though the straps on the bike always seem too tight or too loose.
Not quite related, but my CaBi membership has made my beater bike mostly obsolete. I usually take CaBi for trips to/from Union Station, nights out on the town, etc, and the electric option is great when I’m tired or just want to sweat a little less before a train ride.

ParticipantThanks for sharing.
In addition to opening Beach Dr to recreational use, the current restrictions also make it much more pleasant to use the many nearby trails and picnic areas.

ParticipantThanks for the updates. Admittedly I’m not a regular, but I’ve never had issues at HP and have always felt safe cycling there. Very bothersome to read about the deaths.
