ParticipantYep – I’ve ended up with 2 BTWD shirts, but remember our family of 5 set out this morning looking for goodies and I think we only have a total of 2 BTWD shirts right now. I also ended up with water bottles, blinkies, a U lock, a bandana, a lot of wet clothes and an imprint of my pedal on my leg. FABB tweeted this picture of phatboing and me in Tysons (he caught me going up Gallows). Then my office re-tweeted it. Keeping it classy.

What? I don’t melt, but any combination of the 9 year old, the 11 year old and the grandfather might.

ParticipantOn Saturday DKel and I “ran into” a children’s running event on the trail. There were multiple signs warning of the chaos ahead. While I thought the signs were pretty helpful, and I enjoyed their youthful enthusiasm, I do wish there was some “when you run on the trail you need to stay to the right so that faster people can pass you” education with the runners.
All of this is to say, perhaps they haven’t removed one of the signs?

ParticipantWhile not really a trail, I ride on Gallows Rd to and from Tysons. It’s typically a pretty gritty debris-strewn ride and I hate it. That said, I decided to try and be proactive and fill out an official report with DOT and ask them to sweep the street. I don’t really know what happened, and it could have been the rain, but that’s a clean street now! Yay! Gallows Road, clear!

ParticipantThanks Fast Friendly Guy for a great time last weekend! I’m just getting to look at the pictures I took of the drawing process. A fun day was had by all (even if the littlest boy and I didn’t always portage through the graveyard!).

Obviously I’m an idiot: I’ve tried this gizmo with rides that I *know* that I either passed someone I know coming the opposite direction, or rode with someone I know, and I see nothing but my own stupid face in a circle by itself. No one likes me! Not even Strava!
:mad::confused::p
Do you need me to show you how it works?

ParticipantJust last week I saw a bike-bike collision on the W&OD because the passing bike failed to call the pass and the being-passed bike failed to signal his turn left.
Right after the Gallows stop, all the bikes and peds were bunched up and sorting out their relative speed. I was third in line. Front guy (Being-Passed Bike) was a little slow. The bike in front of me (Passing Bike) and I wanted to pass the Being-Passed Bike, but just couldn’t do it safely yet. Passing Bike finally(!) sees an opportunity to pass just as we approach Sandburg. Passing Bike moves to the left to pass and Being-Passed Bike turns left onto Sandburg. Because of my position, I could see it all go down in slow-motion. Being-Passed Bike goes down hard in the middle of the Sandburg intersection.
I don’t always call my passes or signal my turns, but I really try to. I don’t want to have to say something like “Your honor, I didn’t think I needed to call that pass.”

This morning’s ride made my day! I rode out with Rockford10, and just as we reached the W&OD, we met Dickie! Had a lovely ride out to Gallows, chatting it up all the way. Then I rode up Gallows with Rockford to her job (to see what her commute is like). Rode back down Gallows and through Electric Ave to Vienna, but instead of heading straight to work, I tried a paved path through the parks in the neighborhood behind my office; I had never been through there, and found it a lovely ride from East St to Old Courthouse Rd! Who knew? I wish every day could be like this!
Sadly, no large black dildos were found this morning.

Participant*shrug* I always found it useful. The Annandale High School track team (go Atoms!) used that all the time to get over to Wakefield Park and the trail around Lake Accotink. The only other way was through North Springfield and Hemming Ave.
