Carol, you’re looking for a straight bingo – 5 across, down, or diagonally, correct?

Also, I just okayed you to follow me on Strava. I didn’t see that the first time reading the rules, apologies.

I’m so excited about doing freezing saddles for the first time. I’ve started conjuring various weather scenarios and plans of biking. So how arr ways to ride in the snow? What have others done? This is gonna be fun!!
    Rebecca

Hey Rebecca, it’s all about riding at least 1 mile every day. Some people in the past have taken their bikes to parking garages to get their miles in. Others have pushed their bikes through snow. And many have ridden starting at 0:00:01 on a day that snow/sleet is in the forecast later that day. It all counts, as long as it’s outside riding! And try to meet up with your team on occasion, that helps with the motivation!

Hi all, this is my first year participating in Freezing Saddles. I commute a few miles each way by bike and put in a lot of miles indoors on the trainer during the winter. I plan to do some road, gravel and cyclocross races next year so will be getting in some base miles this winter.

    Sam

    Welcome, Sam!

Your team will be very excited to know you commute regularly by bike – those miles count. They will probably try to get you to take the long way to/from work and get you to forego the trainer because alas, those indoor miles don’t count. :-)

The nefarious plan of the long time cabal is to woo you to the dark…er…OUTside for all miles. This may be the winter that tries all of our souls though!

FS’er Nigel Brockton posted this in the FS 2024 Facebook group. Hope it’s helpful.

As the co-host of the prize, I’ll answer this one.

If any player wants to ensure there is no ambiguity about when their ride/post occurred, that player should stop their Strava at midnight and start a fresh one at midnight +1 second. At that time, the new Wordle will need to be solved for that particular day.

We were totally honoring you. Your prowess has become legendary! We just didn’t want you to think you (and others who get out early) had to wait for us to post so that no one else would have their wordle game spoiled. We are grateful for your leadership in all areas – even in the dark! lol

I have an old nylon weather shell that was designed for rain which had detachable sleeves. It was always useless as a rain jacket but as an in between layer it is perfect. It keeps my core warm which means my body sends the warmies to my toes and fingers more quickly. I couldn’t find it all of last winter and was about to buy a cheap shell and cut the sleeves off but it showed up when I went into the box of Halloween bike decor. I guess last year “orange” meant Halloween. I wear it on top of my base layer (most days that’s a smart wool long sleeve embarrassingly decrepit shirt), and then layer another light jacket on top of it if necessary.

    +1 for the bar mitts.

And when it’s stupid cold, I use Lake cold weather biking boots, but we’re not there yet.

Some people keep a chart. I’m not that organized. But you can search the forum from past years and probably come across some.

I love this prize but I don’t live in Arlington so I will just applaud and admire those of you who do this.

That said, I’m the president of the Friends of the W&OD, and if any of the participants in the prize hunt use the W&OD to transport the food, and is willing to shoot me a photo of you doing it, I will be happy to post it to the W&OD’s social media and raise awareness for the Food Rescue DC program as well as the participants.

And I might be able to find some cool W&OD SWAG as an additional prize. 2024 is the W&OD’s 50th Anniversary and we want to show off all the different ways people use it! Who knew, “delivering food for others” would be one of those ways?

Not stupid at all. This year you can get points for PIZZA!!! Welcome back.

I love pizza. Pretty much any kind of pizza. This could be very dangerous for me to try to win, but to keep my tires in for motivation, I can do this! No chance of me winning given my distance from any of those garden spots referenced, but if it gets me to a) ride my 10 miles per day for my team and b) discover as yet undiscovered pizza places, it’s a WIN.

And for cvcalhoun, the only time I seriously, vehemently, and vociferously dis those from MD is when they’re trying to kill me in their cars as they try to drive around the Reston area. I have yet to experience a person on a bike from MD who has treated me in a similar fashion. :-)

I’m thinking of either taking the metro to the end and biking back home or doing it the other way around. If anyone’s interested, I might organize group rides for the Golden Spike prize.

Serdar there are a few “ends” to shoot for! This could be fun to do various ones. I’ll be watching this as it develops.

Just remember that whether a Pointless Prize is offered in any given year depends on whether anyone offers to give it. (This is an all volunteer organization.) Thus, a prize offered last year won’t necessarily be offered again this year.

I offered this prize last year to help 1st timers stay motivated when it becomes a slog. In the end, it didn’t really work, so I’m not inclined to do it again this year. Instead, I’ll be fully employed with Serdar managing the photo challenge. We’re adding a fun/challenging twist this year. All details will be revealed on December 15!

p.s. If anyone else wants to offer a First Timers prize, there are a lot of them this year – so feel free to create your own adventure for them! I have no claim on it.

Oh, no! Please make sure we are following one another on Strava (Steve Szibler) and keep us informed about your recovery, etc. I can at least send you anti-car infrastructure stuff. So angry recently with drivers hitting friends and coming so close myself.

Note the end of this video. It’s about more than making infrastructure easier for us.

Thank you Steve and everyone — I’m actually doing a lot better today. My son is checking the bike out right now. I think it’s fine too (I was kinda hoping for a new bike …) . Steve, I’m not on Strava except during FS so I’ll be signing off it tonight. I’m very involved with bike safety in VA, but that doesn’t help me much down here in El Paso. But thanks. Have fun tonight everyone! Be safe!
