I love everything about this post!

ParticipantThese are my new favorites. They say “Surly” on the top (to match my Straggler), but that’s not the important part. The fact that they’re warm wool is … and the laugh out loud moment when I read this on them the first time. It still makes me smile every time I pull them on.

I don’t know if you’ll consider this adequate, but it was cold today so I grabbed what I could and kept moving.

From the marker:
In 1859, Abram Lydecker, a New Jersey merchant, purchased land in Vienna on which to build a large combination dwelling and store. The Lydecker family was displaced early as the Civil War swirled around the small village. Vienna village changed hands many times and the Lydecker’s store and residents was occupied by both sides. Union officers were quartered here and kept their horses in the cellar. The Confederate army used it as a hospital.
The Alexandria, Loudoun and Hampshire Railroad passed nearby. A wooden bridge connected the store with the tracks. On June 12, 1861, Confederate troops ambushed and routed solders from four companies of the First Ohio Regiment less than one-half mile from this spot as they approached Vienna by train. The Federals, most of whom had left the train to fight, were forced to retreat on foot when the engineer hurriedly escaped with the locomotive and attached cars.

As many times as I’ve ridden on this street in Vienna, this is the first time I noticed this.

Local coffee house in Vienna. A favorite with cyclists as it’s just off the W&OD on Church St. Bikeracks courtesy of Bikes@Vienna.

ParticipantIt does seem strange to be doing Freezing Saddles w/o Pete.

ParticipantI humbly accept your DQ — but I swear I went to your original ask, and hit “reply” – which I thought would include that. Rats. Oh well, they weren’t the best birds anyway. Today I saw many more!

ParticipantIs this in Arlington? The map is so light I can’t really tell what the streets are.

ParticipantI swear, I’m old enough to go in! It says TWELVE!

ParticipantI liked your post because you ably answered the bird call (sorry)…but I really hate that birds are for sale, especially birds that don’t technically belong in North America (toucans, budgies, parrots). It makes me sad to see them in cages.

ParticipantI call these my “Tequila Sunrise” socks due to the color pattern. They were hand-knitted for me by the BEST riding partner ever, Lefty Laura. This photo from today is when I was wearing them over another pair of socks and the bottom of my riding pants. And sadly, my feet were STILL cold so cut my ride short! But if I’d been wearing booties, you wouldn’t have been able to see these excellent socks!

ParticipantNext to the word “Ubiquitous” in the dictionary and also in every smidgen of water in the area. Hey Canada, take your geese back!

ParticipantI’m interested in checking this one out myself as any way to stay off 29 is a good thing. When I click the strava link I get “The requested activity cannot be found”. Would you mind double checking it when you get a chance? (No urgency). I’m looking at Google Maps of the area and having a tough time understanding the connection. Thanks and thanks for sharing your finds!
