Kris, one more question for future days. Must the flag be an actual flag, and not an artistic representation of one?
Thanks!

Apologize, I just saw the answer when reading the instructions slowly. A real flag, not a representation thereof.

01/01/2023 MURAL
This particular mural seems to me to be particularly appropriate for the first day of 2024.

“P.E.A.C.E” by Hamilton Glass, Paint on PVC. In 2022, Glass was commissioned to install this mural on one of Dogwood Elementary School’s exterior walls so that the entire community could enjoy it. The mural’s central theme is the school’s motto of “Peace-Equity-Access-Connection-Excellence.” Dogwood Elemenary School is in Reston, VA.Karen, you need to change the date or it won’t show up.

ParticipantThis is not a DISLIKE — my finger tapped twice which turned it into a dislike but the forum tells me I don’t have the authority to undo it.
My sincere apologies. This one actually made me laugh out loud!

Are we talking only official (country, state, or county) flags? Or would for example a flag of a sports team count? A POW flag? A flag of one of the branches of the military?

Participant1/1/24 Mural
This mural pays homage to the ancient Mayans, who played this game Tlachko, and the game was said to mirror the progression of the sun across the heavens. Since this is a new calendar year, I thought this was very appropriate. Submitted, but not eligible to win as I am the sponsor of this prize.

I know it’s not my prize, but in Carol’s defense, I think that a picture that is taken and posted for the correct day on that day on this forum, regardless if the ride started the day before, should count.
Example: I start riding around at 11:30pm, because I’m odd (or I’m Carol). At 12:10am I solve the Wordle, and the word is Steve. Shortly afterward I take an artistic and mesmerizing selfie. I go home and finish my ride at 1am. When I awake at 7am I post my award-worthy photo on this forum.
That should count, IMO.Ah – Steve – you can run the game next year and create the “CVC” exception! That’s the beauty of being the sponsor.
In the meantime, Serdar and I will try to do a good job for this winter’s fun.

Want to get in some fun miles on Jan. 7? Join me and my BikeArlington pals as we bring back the Notorious ARL ride, an 18-mile loop visiting County sites of crime, espionage, and the dark side of our history. Will start and end at Barcroft Park parking lot. Wheels up a 1pm.
Get more details and reserve your space here.

This is a great ride and if you’ve not ridden with Henry, you’ll be spoiled by a great tour guide and very patient leader! If you live in Arlington, particularly, and you’ve never done this, you’re missing out on really cool (?) history!

I’m pretty easy going. I’ll go ahead and add this to the rules. However, I don’t wan’t to see any picture of someone’s house burning down or people in distress. This is supposed to be something fun and not depressing!
Oh yikes, no we don’t want that! I think most of the time I see our local crew going out it’s over before it really gets started, thank goodness!

We all realize that a fire is a bad thing. Luckily, there are many FD’s and VFD’s around to help put them out.
Your job is to take a picture of one of them while on a bike ride.
In addition to taking pictures of PO’s, I also like to take pictures of FD’s. It’s another a great way to keep track of where I’ve been. I’ll probably play along, but I won’t give myself a prize.
Here are the basic rules (subject to change if I get a lot of questions):
1. One station per day.
2. No repeating the same station. However, I realize that many counties/cities have multiple locations. A different station in the same county/city would be fine.
3. I really don’t care about you or your bike. I want to see the name of the station somewhere in the picture. I’ll accept a sign, but I’d prefer the actual building.
4. You don’t have to post a picture on this thread, but it would be appreciated. I like to see what people come up with. It’s also a great way to interact with others.
5. If somone is getting so many pictures but not posting on here, you need to let me have access to your Strava feed so I can see if all looks legit. Trust me, it will only be for a short time. I don’t follow many people.
6. Use #fire on your Strava post and make sure to post the picture to your activity. (Assuming the admins say that #fire is ok)
7. As usual, prizes to be determined. Most likely for top 3 unless there is very little interest.
8. I’d say bonus points if you see a real fire, but like the title says: Fire bad!
9. Feel free to stop by a station and thank the people for what they are doing. No points for that, but it should make you feel good.p.s. A picture like this would be just fine!

Hot idea, Alan!
How about taking a photo of a fire dept vehicle out on a run? (as opposed to parked at the grocery store while they shop…)? It wouldn’t show the firehouse, but it would still be cool…er…hot…but not bad?
