    Belt driven, coaster brakes….

Throw in solid rubber tires and wheels that don’t need truing and I think you’re there.

Of course with no rim-friction brakes, there’s a bigger allowance for untrue wheels. Flats? Not so much. Still got to fix those.

    That is a great idea!!

Back when I was in college I took a bike maintenance course (yes, for credit!). 3 hours, one night per week. After we had learned all the skills on our own bikes we were instructed to bring in our friends’ bikes to work on. So I would carry their bike on my shoulder while riding my bike to class. So it can be done.

    You mean like this?

Out of curiousity, what is Phoenix Bike’s need for bikes like at the moment? My condo bike room is full of bikes that are never ridden. I wonder about trying to coordinate a drive. I see on the website that the below is true.

Unfortunately, we don’t currently have a way to pick up donated bikes. However, if you have a group of bikes to donate (condominiums, churches, community bike drives, etc.), or regularly have bikes (bike shops, police departments, etc.), it may be possible for us to coordinate a volunteer pick-up. Contact us with details or questions if you have a bunch of bikes!

That website text is a little dated. We do arrange for bulk (10+ bikes) pickups on a regular basis. It usually takes a few weeks to tag the bikes and sort the truly abandoned from the merely neglected bikes. If you start now, I suspect we can get them in Sept/Oct.

I actually thought he was the Jolly Green Giant at first. Too much smiling to be a monster. :)

    Erin:

Welcome to Arlington, the forum, and Bike Arlington in particular.

Another event I’d like to get on your radar is Phoenix Bikes’ monthly (3rd Wednesdays) All the Cycle Ladies clinics in our shop in Barcroft Park. The next one is tomorrow (4/16), 6:30-9pm. This one focuses on being a bike commuter, but more importantly, can help introduce you to more bike-curious riders, just the group you’re trying reach. Most attendees are just getting into the habit and want to learn more.

The poseur with the flat tire on the Custis Hill two nights ago was my son, who had worn through his tire using my trainer ~ but who has refused, like any good teenager, to learn how to fix a flat.

If only there were some place nearby where teens could learn to fix a flat. For free. ;)

You ride up next to a cyclist, start up a conversation with them about their belt-driven, 8-speed internal hub Trek, carry on this conversation for several blocks before realizing the rider is a former co-worker from your last job. This happened to me this morning.

Awesome news that Gearin’ Up is finally set to open its doors. I’ve been working with Kate off and on for the past year with what ever advice I could. Phoenix Bikes also donated a bunch of surplus tools for the start up. Hope it helps.

I encourage everyone to support this important new DC program.

Whew! For a second I thought someone had made an unauthorized “tell all” about Phoenix Bikes.

It doesn’t sound like a great case. You could spend money on a new bike (or fork) instead of a lawyer. If you don’t like that shop, you could spend your money at Phoenix bikes, which is an awesome non-profit, so the money goes to a good cause.

Thanks for the plug. We’d be happy to take a look and, assuming we have some forks that fit, I know we can replace them for well under $400. Well. Under.

That said, I can’t help but think this is a reason many high-end shops refuse to even touch older bikes that haven’t been well maintained.

So what’s the rule on riding between lines of cars stopped at lights? Or up the left hand side between cars and the curb?
