Yeah, you need a dog to fix the second problem.

Because having twice digested dog poop on the floor is way better than having cat poop on the floor!

Well, I’m not really a bike commuter, since I work from home, and haven’t found a way to bicycle from my bedroom to my office. And I also have a bike that is very sturdy (albeit at the cost of being 64 lbs.), and rarely needs repairs that require even an overnight at the repair place. At the risk of compounding my heresy, the cost of taking Metro the few times my bike is out of commission is a lot less than the cost of a second bike.

You do know that you’re talking heresy? Honestly though, if you are committed to being a bike commuter, the minimum number of bikes is two – you always need a backup to keep you off the Metro and out of the car. Also, congratulations to your wife on the newish wheels. ;)

Sorry I missed most of it. Coming from Bethesda, the timing is hard to predict. And today I got caught in a crowd of tourists on the Mall, and must have arrived at the Smithsonian CaBi just after you guys left. And by the time I figured out where you’d gone and arrived there, you were just leaving.

I’m at the Smithsonian CaBi station, but don’t see anyone. Where are you?

I already have a bike (and don’t subscribe to the idea that I must have n+1 bikes). However, we did get a new bike for my wife today. We finally found one small enough for her 5’1″ height and legs that are disproportionately short even for her height. It’s a 13.5″ Trek 7200, bought from someone who had only used it 3 times. Yes, I know it’s a beginner’s bike, but she is a beginner (and a bit nervous about whether biking is for her).

I wonder if they’d give us a helmet even if we showed up in a car? My wife just got a new bike today, but doesn’t want to ride it until she has a helmet.

They sent an email newsletter on Tuesday about upcoming bike events, plus this:

BIKE TO WORK DAY T-SHIRT PICKUP
    WHEN: Thursday, May 29th
    11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
WHERE: 1900 Crystal Drive (corner of 18th Street S. and Crystal Drive)
WHAT: The heavy rain on Bike to Work Day made it unsafe for some cyclists to ride in on May 16th. We have set up a location on May 29th for those unable to pick up their t-shirt on Bike to Work Day. We will also be handing out FREE Crystal City Bike Helmets for those who were not able to grab one. If riders are still not able to stop by they can visit the Tour de Fat Bicycle Festival on May 31st for an opportunity to get their BTWD t-shirt.

We already know we’ve got someone from the FCC on this forum, keeping an eye out for cell phone jammers. Do we also have a representative of the Park Service here checking on open containers?

How great a deal it is might be more apparent if you said what price you are asking. Just saying…

Apparently, there is a 30% chance of seeing that Land Shark.

Here’s the site for Rockville. The rides won’t work for us, because they are always on weekends, and we only ever have my granddaughter on weekdays. But I’m glad to see more bicycling stuff in Maryland generally. Believe me, I’m jealous of the amount of stuff that always seems to be going on in Virginia!

I’ve just heard that Rockville is getting into the game too. KM DC, Arl, ALX, FC, Rockville, Gaithersburg (I think) and hopefully Reston. Not too shabby, I’d say. Though I’d love to see Bethesda, College Park, Takoma Park, Silver Spring and even Fairfax get in the game. Who’s starting those?

Arlington is mixing up Saturdays and Sundays this year. Schedule here.

Have you biked from K Street in Georgetown to the National Cathedral lately? That will trigger the elevation thing in less than 4 miles.

So how did you get through that stretch of trail at 2:15?

Here’s my video of Bike to Work Day 2014 – Monsoon Ride:

Contrast this year with last year: http://youtu.be/cDcRV-u7Ijk

I also realized from making the video that there were a lot more people that I did not recognize at first that morning that I now think, “Oh, that was [insert name]! How did I miss them?” and remember that it was early in the morning, way before my ability-to-recognize-people ability even kicks in.

The good news for today is that my bike seems to have recovered from my attempt to use it as a river vehicle through Rock Creek. Yesterday, my wheel lights were refusing to turn off, which I suspected had to do with their having been shorted out due to being immersed right up to the axle when I tried to pedal the bicycle over a section of Rock Creek Trail which had gotten overflowed by Rock Creek. However, they seem to have resumed normal functioning today.

    Bethesda:

Nothing there when I arrived at 7:15 except a sign lying on the ground. I got an e-mail later saying that they had been open and had 130 riders there, but I can only assume they either opened very late or closed very early. (It was supposed to be open 6:30 am to 8:30 am, so 7:15 should have been right in the middle of it.) This was particularly frustrating, because I didn’t have to be anywhere until 10:00 AM, and had gotten up early and braved the rain specifically in order to get to Bethesda, which was my registered stop.

    Georgetown Waterfront:

Lots of good food here–coffee, cupcakes, granola, bananas, yogurt. Also picked up map, copy of DC bike laws booklet, water bottle, Chipotle coupon, and coupons for a one-day CaBi membership and $10 off a yearly membership. Was initially told I could not get my t-shirt there because I wasn’t registered there, but someone finally relented after I explained I had been relying on a t-shirt as something dry to change into. No raffles. Revolution Cycle had a tune-up station there.

    Georgetown Library:

Not an official pit stop, but they were handing out a free book, animal crackers, and fruit punch to anyone who bicycled there. The selection of books was unexpectedly good. And they were there all day, so I didn’t have to make it during a specific morning or evening period.

    Malmaison: (Happy Hour)

I was a bit disappointed in this one. I’d thought it might be a chance to meet other cyclists. But it was so spread out that cyclists were not talking to each other. They did have some happy hour specials. But when I ordered the half-priced cocktail special, they charged me full price and I had to go back and complain to get the extra charge removed.

    Capital Heights: (afternoon)

Another Chipotle coupon, a banana, and a couple of granola bars. Not a lot of swag, although I could have gotten my map and DC bike laws pamphlet there. They had socks, but were charging $7 for them, so I passed. But they were doing raffles every 15 minutes. I won the one for the 10 yoga sessions. Of course, I’m not entirely sure what I’ll do with it given that I don’t do yoga and don’t live or work in that area. But the frequent raffles definitely increased the fun factor, and kept people hanging around and socializing longer than they otherwise would have. And they also gave me another t-shirt.
