I just heard back from the relevant members of the Cabal, and we’re allowing this.  I have opted out of Zip code based teams for the two of you.  Anyone who signs up in future will be given this option.  Anyone who has already signed up but now wants to opt out of being assigned by Zip code can use the contact form to let us know.

My suggestion would be that you follow the steps to become a Friend of BAFS now.  Then you can check back January 1 and see whether we’ve hit the 250.  If we haven’t, you can register then.  (Nothing in registering as a “Friend” will create a problem in registering for a team later.)

Also, if you decide not to register, I would suggest using the contact form to indicate that you are willing to be on a team if you are needed.  Even if we hit the 250, we always have some people who sign up and then never join their team, or who get injured during the season, so we always like to have some in reserve as replacements.  (I’m not the one in charge of team placements, but the contact form will notify the people who are.)
