ParticipantYeah, because 1,010.7 miles in May alone is just nothing!

ParticipantApparently, it is a question of adjusting the sensor properly, rather than requiring a different kind of sensor. The only extra cost would be if the jurisdiction chose to mark the “sweet spot” that a bicycle should aim for in order to trigger the signal.

ParticipantAlternatively, at least one of them may have put in miles from a bunch of days all at once, instead of putting it in for each day. The guy with 539 miles on June 1 shows no miles at all for May 25 through 31, even though he had bicycled at least 4 days a week in each of the prior weeks of May. If he missed the May 31 deadline for getting his May miles in, he may have decided to dump all the May miles into June to get some credit for them. Yeah, he shouldn’t have done that. However, the rules are a bit bizarre in providing no mechanism for crediting miles during a competition if they are ridden in one month, but not entered until the following month. And there is no grace period. For example, if a guy starts a ride just before midnight on May 31, and doesn’t end it until after midnight, the ride can’t be credited to either May or June.
That wouldn’t explain the guy with 378 miles, though. He allegedly also rode 263.9 miles back on May 18.

The top placed guy for the month of June on NBC shows 539 miles ridden in 1 day. Next guy, 378 miles. I’m guessing they tried to put in the tenth of a mile and messed up. If not, I think everyone should quit and name them the best cyclists of all time.

Was it just over Bradley Boulevard by Washington Episcopal School?
Yep, that’s the one.

ParticipantSo, on my commute home on the CCT this evening, I saw one of those signs that says the speed limit, and then says how fast you, personally, are going. Speed limit on the CCT was 15, and it said I was going 17. (The sign may have been counterproductive in my case, because my primary reaction was pride that I’d actually managed to get my 64-lb. hybrid up to 17, as opposed to shame that I was exceeding the speed limit.) But it occurred to me that I have not seen (or at least not noticed) that sign before. Does anyone know whether it is new? Or only operates at night? Or only turns on if you are in fact exceeding the speed limit? (Maybe I never managed to do that before?)

ParticipantLatest completely ludicrous bike-related purchase (for when my granddaughter rides in my bike trailer):

Yes, we are making a monkey of her!

ParticipantOops, didn’t see this until just now. Thanks for the offer! However, given that my wife was having to use all the padding and tighten up all of the straps in order to be able to use even a size small helmet, yours would be unlikely to fit her. (If her head were any smaller, we’d be having to shop the Hello Kitty aisle!) We did manage to get to Crystal City today, and pick up one for her there.

I’d be happy to give you a brand new unused red CaBi helmet. FYI, the CC helmets are black.

ParticipantWhen I grew up, the high end bikes were either a Schwinn or a Raleigh. I was in college before I saw my first bike with more than 3 gears. And that first one (a 10-speed) seemed to me grossly impractical, as there was no click to let you know when it was in a particular gear.
And now all you whipper-snappers, get off of my lawn!

ParticipantI keep mine in a Delta smartphone holder on my handlebars. Not only is it ready for shots on the fly, but I can use the GPS to get me around town. Isn’t that what everyone does?

So, I’m curious, where and how do you keep your phone that it doesn’t get sweaty, but it’s ready for shots on the fly? I zip lock mine, but it’s never handy

ParticipantThis is the first time I’ve seen them split up by category (bronze, silver, gold, etc.). I know you can’t win more than one prize per month, but I wonder whether, say, a gold cyclist can win a bronze prize?
Also, I know that Platinum and Diamond categories apply only at the end of the competition. But I wonder how many of the other prizes will be awarded monthly, as opposed to only at the end.

ParticipantAnd for thee and me, it’s probably not even really a year’s supply. They seem to be using an average, which presumably overstates the amount men use and understates the amount women do.

ParticipantI am amused to notice that I am currently #1 of 15 in Bethesda, even though I’m #40 of 119 on my team. Just one more confirmation that Bethesda is far from a haven for bicycling!

ParticipantI bicycle every week with someone who is 80. And it’s only in the past year that I’ve finally been able to beat him up the big hill along our route!
