I drove in today, again. My mileage is negligible for the year due to the pain. I had my RFA 2 weeks ago, and the pain has significantly subsided now, I just need to motivate myself to get back in the saddle again. I figure posting here might put some accountability pressure on myself :)

Me: driving on the right side of the road somewhere in DC, headed to my doctor’s.

You: riding down the middle of the lane I’m in, heading straight at me, on a bicycle. You didn’t appear to really care you were riding illegally, but I really was sad to see it. It gives a lot of cyclists a bad name, as if we’re all just scofflaws and could care less. I’m more sad due to the fact that you looked exactly like Gwadzilla. Hopefully it was just a look alike.

    Missing: all of you folks.

Got a few PMs, thank you. Sitting in the Dr office now, trying to relax from an injection in the L3/L4/L5. This is a procedure before the RFA to burn the peripheral sensory nerves in the facet joints. Had some injections earlier in the year too. The pain has pretty much kept me down, I don’t even want to get out of bed some days, much less get on a bike. Even though cycling helps, I’m finding it hard to fight through the pain enough to do so. It is relentless. It could be a lot worse, I’ve watched my dad suffer through rheumatoid arthritis for as long as I can remember and my grandma’s hands were like disfigured claws. So, I am staying relatively positive as I know the injections and RFA will (eventually) put the pain at bay.

Freezing Saddles? No, it wasn’t my saddle. It wasn’t my toes. It wasn’t even my fingers. It was the two tender discs of flesh on my chest. I’ll have to strategically position my scarf on the way home.

was it a bit nipply outside?

My morning commute… was pretty cold for about the first 10 minutes! My car heater took longer than usual to warm up. Traffic wasn’t too bad, thankfully, in the direction I head. All other directions, however, were abysmal. Thoughts go out for the fatality on 270 this morning :(

Sounds like today was a good day to be bike-commuting, unless you (like me) have a commute “against the flow”.

Team with most crashes during #BAFS? (I believe Crit My Pants already has 2, and has had an appropriate avatar (graphic) since the beginning)

    What’s a cell phone locker?

certain “facilities” (usually classified) will have cell phone lockers for you to lock your cell phone in while you’re at work, as they’re not allowed inside the SCIF (sensitive compartmented information facility)

glad you and the bike are ok

thanks! I kind of felt bad. On one hand, I shouldn’t have been salmoning, but I had made a wrong turn and was going back to an intersection to cross to the proper side of the road to get headed back in the right direction. So, on the other hand it was pretty much unavoidable. The next place to turn around was on the other side of highway 50, so trying to cross the on/off ramps would have been more dangerous I felt. On the other other hand, she didn’t look right. There was a pedestrian I had jut passed, he saw the entire thing. It could very well have been him she had hit. On my 4th hand, she was a very sweet lady and was really shaken. She told me how she preaches to her kids not to text or drive distracted at all. She also took me back the 4 miles to my work, where my car was parked. I was doing the commute home instead of facing a potential drive on the beltway in falling snow that never came, and was going to ride in today to retrieve my car after work.

It was actually my first wreck ever, which is why I never join in the crash discussions. I never wanted to jinx myself! So, for a first wreck after 2k miles last year, and 4 or 5 Cycle Across Maryland tours back in the early 2000’s, a few centuries, lots of training/mentoring kids on bikes, and thousands of other miles I never tracked, I feel pretty lucky my first crash was so minor.

God god, glad to hear you are all right. What happened? Any citations given?

I had made a wrong turn, and turned back around to head back in the right direction. At the time, I was salmoning :( I was about 50 feet from the intersection where I was going to cross back to the other side to get headed back in the right direction. I had my helmet blinkie on, it wasn’t raining or dark. She was looking to her left as she turned right (on red, but it wasn’t prohibited). She wasn’t texting or even had the radio on. I wasn’t going very fast at all, but just couldn’t brake in time. She was sort of on the shoulder a bit and used that bit of it as a merge. Unfortunately, that was the part of the shoulder I was on. Older lady, very sweet. She actually gave me a ride back to my work where my car was, so I ended up driving home.

Fortunately, I’m OK. The bike, other than a few more scratches, is OK after being straightened up by Anthony at Proteus. I did some super ninja roll and only scratched up my thigh a little. No major injuries, thank God! I kind of felt bad for the lady in the car, super sweet older (55?60?) lady. She just didn’t see me, wasn’t on the phone or anything. I couldn’t brake in time.

also, first ride wearing my RoadID… jinx? I hope not!

it was a good call to keep distance from the orange guy singing badly. ;)

I’m not quite sure if that song can be sung anything other than badly.

uh, ok, I see a lot of talk about swapping out tires and now I’m worried. I hauled my bike (Trek roadie) to work today so I could ride home this afternoon vs. dealing with the helltway. Having worked pretty late Tuesday night, I can afford the luxury of leaving a bit early today. Am I going to be OK on 700x23c tires?
