ParticipantHigh temperature of 24F. Low of 18F. Daytime wind chill of 7 to 9F!

ParticipantAnd below freezing through the weekend!
I’ll have the winter bike out to take advantage of the barmitts.

ParticipantI am scared to death of this cold. Don’t feel confident that I can take it but I am going to give it a try.
We shall see. Think I will wear my winter boots.January 22, 2013 at 1:25 am #960503KelOnWheels
ParticipantYeah, I don’t think I’ve got quite adequate gear for 20s and windy. I will have to work on that this week. Be safe out there!

ParticipantI won’t be riding today. I’m not sure if I’ll do much outdoor riding at all this week. I do much less winter riding than most people here anyway.
I may have to try another session on the mountain bike machine-video game at the gym. Instead of the typical spin bike, the machine is set up like a mountain bike, with steering, brakes and gears. There’s a video screen with various simulated courses. The riding isn’t quite accurate. Basically any obstacle cranks up the gearing on the “bike”, so I spend most of the time shifting back to easier gears, over and over again. But it’s a pretty good workout. And a lot warmer than being in 7F wind chill.

ParticipantPlease be safe everyone. Don’t ride if you’re not prepared for it, and if you do ride, have bailout options.
Update: Just took a very short ride and I think I would have been fine for a full commute. The wind gusts are picking up.
Couple of other things – the news just reported that this week is, on average, the coldest week of the year. Also, learned in scuba classes that 25% of your body heat is lost from your head. Wearing a layer under your helmet can make a big difference in weather like this.

ParticipantRemember, when the weather report says, “feels like”, that’s optional. No one can tell you how to feel. I feel like it’s 72 and sunny.

ParticipantIt wasn’t horrible this morning. I got a little bit of an ice cream headache at the end of Key Bridge, but otherwise I was ok.

ParticipantIt was pretty bad this morning, only saw a few riders. I remember biking a few years ago when it was near 17F, think this morning the weather report said 22F. At various times, two fingers on my left hand and a few toes on my right foot would get cold/numb during my hour commute and I would concentrate on moving them around to get the blood flowing to that particular spot. However, no other part of my body ever got that cold. I’m not sure if occasional numbness/coldness in fingers and toes is entirely because of the cold or partly because of bike fit which may inhibit blod flow at some times.
I am a bit more worried by the ride home back west because I will have a head wind that will mean I will need to work a lot harder to get back and while that is fine on most of my body, the some fingers and toes may get a bit cold again.

ParticipantBack when I had a much shorter commute (~5mi) I would ride down into the teens, but at 15mi I’m reconsidering today.

ParticipantHad to bust out the balaclava this morning, wasn’t too bad. I saw a guy riding westbound on the Custis in shorts (at the 2 sisters), made me feel like a wuss.

ParticipantIt was a cold morning to be a goose.

ParticipantVery cold this morning. My hands were warm in peal izumi gloves inside of thick ski gloves, but I ended up shifting 2 gears at a time. The wind across the 14th street bridge was intense. My left eye teared up then my eyelashes started to freeze together, as I leaned into the wind the whole way across. At the north end of the bridge I passed a CaBi heading southbound, and felt sorry for her.
Wind at my back no problems, wind in my face, very cold. I wanted to ride in 25 miles at least twice this week, but that my be a little tough, and now I hear they are calling for snow on Friday!

ParticipantI was surprised to see so many riders out. One going the opposite way (northbound on Westmoreland), then 2 or 3 road riders passed me on the W&OD (nice tailwind there), plus an cycle ninja/idiot going northwest. Then I almost caught up to Dirt a few times before I turned off the MVT for DC, and I passed at least another 2 riders.
I tried my Moose Mitts for the first time. They seemed ok although my fingers were still cold. Hard to compare high 30s with low 20s (plus windchill) though. I may try to fit them on more snugly for the return ride. I noticed if I put my hands closer into the fabric they got less cold. My feet were definitely suffering a little but my core was more than warm enough – a little sweat buildup by the end.
