Anyone thought about doing this to their bike? http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=13125566&postcount=18
It’s the DIY version of moose mitts/bar mitts!
KTM 990 Adventure – $15,000
Wind guards – what am I, made of money?January 22, 2013 at 4:53 pm #960450dbb
ParticipantI installed my Moose Mitts for the first time this season and noticed significant conflicts between my mitts, lights and cyclometer. One of my lights and my cyclometer were likely quite comfy inside my mitts, albiet of little use. Need some kind of bar extender to mount all the crap on my bars.

With my BarMitts on my flat bar bike I have no room for the bell since there is just space for the Garmin and the light. For my winter setup, I don’t like mounting the Garmin on the stem because it ends up being too vertical to read easily. But on the other hand, a muffled “On your left,” spoken through a balaclava isn’t very impressive. Of course, I don’t want to take my hands out of the BarMitts to ring a bell in this weather anyway.

ParticipantI think once you get below 20F it all feels the same.
Of course, I’ve never been below 0F.
I have a small bar extender on my road bike for my Garmin, and one small light. My main light then fits (upside down) near the stem, “behind” it.
One thing I don’t get with the Moose Mitts is why the reflective stuff (for the road drop version) is facing the inside of the bike.
I also just called my passes today instead of reaching over to the bell.

ParticipantI think the caliper on my rear disc brake (mechanical, Avid BB7) froze up this morning. It started out fine as I hit the road, but shortly after, it got stuck in the closed position. Fortunately, I was able to loosen it enough with the outside dial to get the wheel spinning again – which meant no rear brake for the rest of the ride in. I’ll take a look at lunch, but I wonder if anyone has had anything similar

From my time growing up in North Dakota, I’d say that once you get below -20F, it all feels the same until you get to the -50s or -60s with wind chill.
Today’s lunch time run was quite pleasant actually–downright invigorating!

My bike is already starting to look like it’s ready for a deep-sea expedition… although I was really glad that I DO have 4 headlights the other night when 3 of them went out.

You’ve got them on the wrong side, have you tried switching them? :p Seriously though, mine have the reflective material facing outward.

ParticipantOh and while I was cleaning my drivetrain this weekend I discovered I can’t get my rear tire off (going to have to get a proper wrench) so now I’m worried about getting a flat and freezing to death on the trail

I used to think anything less than 40F felt about the same so I guess I once you get used to experiencing more cold you can actually tell the difference!

Yeah it’s strange, every picture I’ve seen (including on their website) has them like that.

Every 5 degrees (farenheit) I add a layer or something, somewhere. Compared with a 32 degree morning, today (22 degrees at kick-off) I added an extra wind shell for my legs and an extra pair of wool socks.
If it’s 12 degrees tomorrow morning, I’m going triple neck gator and insulated boots.

ParticipantAfter this morning when my fingers and toes alternated getting really cold, I contemplated bailing and riding Metro home. However, I stuck with it and biked home. Even though it was only a few degrees warmer and the wind was just as intense, for some reason my body is better at staying warmer later in the day, not sure why. Any theories?
