ParticipantA cyclist rode off the “Saddle Club Bridge” yesterday in Rock Creek Park. It’s the first bridge south of Connecticut. A piece of railing has been missing for months (it looks like a tree fell on it) and NPS “fixed” it with yellow caution tape.
Rescued from the stream by DC Fire and EMS, and hospitalized with “serious, non-life-threatening” injuries. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

ParticipantICYMI: another doozy of a Purple Line delay. A seven-month time extension, plus a juicy $148 million payment.

Maybe we should put this down as “July 2023-2027 Road and Trail Conditions.” For those of a historical bent, the Georgetown Branch Trail has been closed since 2017.

ParticipantCity of Falls Church — Code of Ordinances — Chap. 26, Article IV:
Sec. 26-109. – Riding and parking regulations.
Every person riding a bicycle upon a bikeway, sidewalk, street, highway or roadway has all the rights and is subject to all the duties applicable to the driver of a motor vehicle, except those provisions which by their very nature can have no application. Additionally, every such person shall comply with the following:
(1)Speed. No bicycle shall be operated faster than is reasonable and proper, but every bicycle shall be operated with reasonable regard for the safety of the operator and every other person upon the streets, sidewalks, highways, roadways, and bikeways of the city.
(2)Observation of traffic regulations. Every person riding a bicycle in the city shall observe all authorized traffic signs, signals and traffic control devices. Whenever signs are erected indicating that no right turn or left turn or U-turn is permitted, no person operating a bicycle shall disobey the direction of any such signs, except where such persons dismount from the bicycle to make any such movements or turns; in which event such a person shall then obey the regulation applicable to pedestrians.
(3)Stop signs. All persons operating a bicycle shall stop at all stop signs.

ParticipantAll lanes of Jones Mill Rd. have re-opened. Now if they would only hurry up and finish the Purple Line overpass at Jones Bridge… sigh…

ParticipantThat trail is especially awful. I generally avoid trails if at all possible.

In my uninformed opinion, speeding on wet roads is a contributing factor to 100% of the cashes there.
Road design can only do so much when it comes to “fixing stupid.”
As for public agencies being held liable for not fixing “obvious” defects in design or maintenance of facilities under their care, it’s a high hurdle.

ParticipantEnough riprap to build a jetty from here to the Moon. Maybe this one will be more flood-resilient.

ParticipantRAIN is not for me (at least this year.) It’s a three-four day commitment.

ParticipantTo be honest, I just take the lane in both directions underneath the Whitehurst. The PBL is not worth the trouble due to encroachments from car drivers and inattentive pedestrians. I like to have room to maneuver when the feces inevitably hits the fan.

ParticipantI stopped by the Ballston location. No complaints, and the perfect location for me. Well organized and lots of friendly volunteers.
I like the t-shirt. As for “running small,” out of the bag the size “small” hangs on me like a circus tent. I usually wear small “race fit” jerseys. I haven’t put it through the wash yet.
Having dealt with team kit and sizing, it can be a huge PITA due to inconsistent sizing across vendors.

ParticipantI might be tempted. The longest ride I’ve done in one “sitting” was 120 miles, and it was in DC/MD/VA with quite a bit of elevation. The best average speed I’ve logged in a century is a nearly 18mph average (Cannonball Century, Fredericksburg, Va. area.)

Yes, but just think of all the fabulous hidden storage space for discarded mattresses and truck tire shreds! The highway will look so tidy! Ooh, and if it ever snows again…
They didn’t put it on the north side of the noise barrier because the bike-riding, lycra-clad, hi-viz heathen might endanger property values.

ParticipantWhile I will wait to use it before passing judgment, riding alongside 12 lanes of traffic one side and a high noise wall on the other is not generally my idea of a good time. Going to be pretty toasty in mid-summer.

ParticipantA “couple” hundred thousand? Golly, I’m in the wrong business.
