Many cycling shoe models have reflective heels, as do shoe covers for the colder rides. The entry-level Sidi MTB shoes I use for commuting have large reflective patches on the heels.

Yeah, I use dual headlights as well. One handlebar mount, and one on the helmet.

The combo seems to be more attention-getting than a single headlight. Plus the helmet light is aimable through tight corners on trails and whatnot.

Redundancy is a good thing, too. Keeping everything charged requires organization.

I find the most challenging part of a cold-weather ride is putting on the gear and getting started. I accept the first half-hour or so is going to suck until my “internal furnace” gets going and “pushes” the heat into the extremities.

Great minds think alike, huskerdont. That’s my “uphill” route too–avoids the pedestrian/dog-walker/slow rider/narrow trail crapstorm behind the sound wall. Downhill is usually in the morning and not problem. No daisy pickers at that hour. Most people just want to get to work in a timely fashion.

A little historical tidbit is that the spur was the last active remnant of the W&OD, and thus part of Norfolk Southern, not CSX. AFAIK, there has not yet been a formal abandonment petition filed with the Surface Transportation Board, a federal body that has jurisdiction over disposal of railroad lines.

DDOT was the lead agency, but no longer. (They slow-walked it for nine years through the DEIS process.)

As of 7:30 this morning, multiple large trees down on the Custis between the Spout Run overpass and Langston. At least three are entangled with the noise barriers–it’s going to be a chore clearing those. It is passable but requires dismounting.

A cyclist rode off the “Saddle Club Bridge” yesterday in Rock Creek Park. It’s the first bridge south of Connecticut. A piece of railing has been missing for months (it looks like a tree fell on it) and NPS “fixed” it with yellow caution tape.
