It was only this month that I started doing a complete back-and-forth commute each day (42.8 miles). Two weeks ago, in the middle of the afternoon, my right calf started cramping while I was sitting at my desk. That woke me up to the fact that I need to add more potassium, calcium and magnesium to my diet. In response I’ve added a cal/mag supplement, and am eating bananas and kale/spinach for potassium. So far, so good.

Well, I just got a CC BID email that said 79 riders rode all five days, so there are going to be 29 disappointed people.

I rode all 5 days, but didn’t bother to check-in until Friday. My loss.

The good news for today is that my bike seems to have recovered from my attempt to use it as a river vehicle through Rock Creek. Yesterday, my wheel lights were refusing to turn off, which I suspected had to do with their having been shorted out due to being immersed right up to the axle when I tried to pedal the bicycle over a section of Rock Creek Trail which had gotten overflowed by Rock Creek. However, they seem to have resumed normal functioning today.

I popped a spoke this morning which I’m blaming on the weather yesterday morning, even though the two are likely not connected. But I’ve got to blame something!

Both Carlyn Springs and Wilson underpasses are flooded, but the rest of the trail is fine. At Carlyn Springs, just take the old “fenced” off path, cross the road at grade and take the gravel Dominion driveway back to the trail. The at-grade crossing of Wilson is obvious.

oh…I didn’t know about that Plan B at Carlin Springs when I forded through the water this morning, thinking about the implications of walking through what must have been, in part, sewage.

Yup, 4MR flooded in usual places. WOD flooded at Wilson and Carlin Springs underpasses – when I went through Carlin Springs about 7:15 the water was crotch deep when I forded through it. That said, it was a good, fun ride.

It is really nasty out there right now. I can’t ride in this. I’m going to wait it out a bit and see what happens.

That helmet looks like it would be brutal when it’s hot…very little ventilation.

Someone I work with just told me that I’m ill-prepared for riding in a rainstorm if my jacket isn’t “long and goretex”, which I found to be hilarious. I suggested that because of the current temperature and humidity, my skin would suffice as a protective layer.

I love it when my legs feel better when I get to work than they did before I started riding.

And the irony is that I’m walking around the house tonight like I’m Fred Sanford.

The times indicated on Greenbelt’s map above are Greenwich Mean Time, so the map covers Thursday evening to Friday evening. That would be one big pile of water for the Friday morning commute if that is realized.

The NAM isn’t very reliable 3 days out, however, in this instance it does resemble the GFS (we may need a sub-forum for cyclist weather geeks).

Hit the Crystal City Bike to Work Week pitstop again this morning and saw all the usual suspects who were there yesterday :D

It makes it really hard to actually GO to work when you’re in a nice park drinking free coffee and all your bike friends are showing up… they should do that every day! :)

My legs are gonna be so dead by Friday…

I keep forgetting to stop there but then, hot coffee isn’t what I’m thinking about when I’ve been sweating for over an hour. But Friday…I must remember that day.

Only 1 bug in my mouth this morning after getting 4 last night with another in my ear. I try to think of it as being a protein supplement.
