There’s a map on post #7 in this thread.

I was asking consularrider for his route (specifically after he crossed roosevelt).

I haven’t had to ride any of this since it all started because of an ankle injury but I’m hoping to start next week.

Is the “preferred” route for both east and west (using eastbound as an example) taking columbia/16th to Roosevelt and then sneaking out into the bike lane so that you can see traffic coming from the left on Roosevelt and then scooting out into the median to check traffic coming from the right? Then you pop onto that little side street that comes out by the basketball court.

Before I had to stop riding, I was using Columbia Street to get around the Lee Hwy bridge so staying on that seems like a nice continuation.

I agree the 16th and Roosevelt eastbound sightlines are horrible, but more manageable on a bike than in a car (especially a stick shift). From Columbia/16th, I like to take Tuckahoe or Sycamore to 11th and cross Roosevelt to 12th in Madison Manor. This gives the added bonus of the climb to 11th. :D

    Map please?

There was discussion about this a few days ago.

Only 3 detours? It does kinda feel like the whole thing is under construction…

Sandburg St. sidewalk (Wormhole #3) isn’t really a shortcut, but takes you between Merrifield and the W&OD while avoiding the ridiculously narrow bike lanes on Gallows Rd.

Love this one. Dkel told me about it a few years ago and now I don’t have to ride the gallows bike lanes at all!

My plan is to start blinking with the first mixing portion, dismount and switch to fade for the trail portion, and dismount to switch back to blinking for the final mixing portion. And research remote-controlled bike lights :)

I usually run a few rear lights – the one on my bike stays steady and then I attach the ones that Bike Arlington hands out every year to my helmet so I can easily change modes as needed without having to stop.

I’m pretty well lit up (colored LED arm bands, colored lights on my wheels etc) so I don’t feel the need to flash my front light at night since there’s no way you CAN’T see me but during dawn or twilight hours you bet I have that thing on flash if I’m on the road (not a trail or path).

To many pedestrians, especially those not familiar with local trail conventions, a bell, especially a loud one, just means “get out of my way.” I use my voice for this reason, but of course, that annoys some people too.

I try (try….) to lead with a pleasantry. “Hi there! Coming by on your left” or such. No one has yelled at me yet but I did have one lady give me the finger.

For the detour (westbound), I recommend exiting the trail at the Roosevelt St. cul-de-sac, up to a left on Sycamore/Roosevelt (there is a median in which to take refuge if you have to wait for the southbound cars to clear) for the short hop to a right onto 16th/Columbia. Then either past Bikenetic or all the way out to Little Falls, and right back to the W&OD. See this ride.

    You are my detour guru.

Add me to the list of owners of issue-laden Riddlers. I still have a 37 on the rear of one bike, but had to take off and ditch the 43 on the front tire because it wobbled so bad.

This guy says he went across.

I hope he rode straight down the yellow middle line, just because he could. Or zig zagged back and forth, whistling.

So I watched the news this morning about Chain Bridge being shut down and saw, in the background of the shot, a cyclist coming down the hill toward the Bridge and stopping. Does anyone know if they allowed cyclists across? Because all I could think about was how horrible it would be to have to turn around and head back up the steep hill and then work your way down to Key Bridge.

I don’t know for sure, but looking at pics on ArlNow, I doubt they’re letting anyone through. The sinkhole is massive and spans almost both lanes.

I learned of the county boil orders AFTER making coffee.

What’s at the east end of it – an all way stop sign? I always found crossing 19th St to be a little hairy – there are crosswalks but they’re generally ignored.

I worked in that building almost 20 years ago! There is (was) a building gym in the basement that was open to all tenants.

Every time I think G Street east of the White House can’t get any worse, I’m proven wrong.

Where does that end up crossing I-66? Either that or can someone direct me to that thread? I do recall that thread but just gave up looking for it. I always have trouble with the organizational structure of this forum’s posts.

You cross 66 at a pedestrian bridge. It takes you off the trail from a little after St Ann’s on Custis to Brandmore Castle on W&OD.

There’s one short punchy hill heading west but I find this route very nice. Low traffic and so far drivers have been very accommodating with me at the crossing of Patrick Henry (I have a stop sign, they don’t but I’ve always been waved through).
