Tried my first commute into work since my new job (20+ miles). I got off to a late start, and then a mile in, I noticed

    1. I forgot my rear light
    2. I forgot my badge
    3. My chain was skipping

So I go back home, accidentally dropped my bike (scratching my saddle and bar tape), and then noticed this:

I am only getting 2-3 chains per cassette before things start skipping in the middle / high-use cogs. E.g. I just discarded my cassette with only 3200 miles on it.

Is this a 10-speed thing? I got 4 chains on my last 9-spd cassette, but the last one took quite a while to settle (it wasn’t skipping, but you could hear it shift on the teeth for the first 1k miles). I got 7k out of the cassette, but the last chain was really stretching it. 10-speed cassettes and chains are narrower, and so there’s a good chance the force on the chain is distributed in a smaller area, increasing the rate of wear.

You can replace the battery in the Edge 500 with a little handiwork:

I’ve never done it, but it looks easier than most cellphone repair jobs.

Yeah, you need a dog to fix the second problem.

The Weehoo is a recumbent trail-a-bike. It has a harness and straps for his feet, which is good, since my eldest likes to get a good nap in while we’re out.

I agree; it doesn’t make a lot of sense. I’d say it’s a Strava bug, but we may want to adjust our scoring logic to round to 4 decimal places or something :)

An easy fix would be to add 1 meter to the strava distance before converting. That should fix any rounding errors, and shouldn’t change the point total otherwise.

Please, take your time. You might even need to stay home to study on Monday, too.

Slacker team members should get negative points for beating their handicap :)

Thanks hozn, jrenaut, and ronwalf for your hard work!

I can’t take any credit this year – it’s all hozn and jrenaut! I’m still harboring a vague hope of put together a pointless prize before the deadline.

Yes, more access than anonymous users. There are limits; we can’t see private rides. I’m not sure about other privacy settings (we won’t see inside privacy zones, I don’t believe, but we’re not pulling those streams [yet]).

One of the privacy settings for Strava is to require permission to follow a user before seeing a list of their rides. I have this one set.

So you can see my rides if you follow me, have a direct link to the ride, or are a member of one of the same clubs as me (not entirely sure on the last one). The FS site adds a new way.

I think removing that page or making it only accessible to challenge members would alleviate a number of the privacy issues Peter mentioned?

Almost took a plunge this morning. Near Lake Artemesia, the entrance road sometimes retains water. I was on the lookout for it, and thought I spotted a dry (but snowy) path to the side. Turns out it was a dusting of snow on an 1/4″ of ice on 3″ of water. It was part icebreaking, part slipping on wet chunks of ice, and all nerve wracking.

I gave a practice talk for my thesis defense 10 minutes later. I’m glad I wasn’t soaked in ice water!

I’m not seeing 500 errors – has something changed? Hozn and I are still getting into the swing of working together on this, so there may be some missed signals here and there.

It’s working for me now, too (and my rides showed up).
