It occurs to me that I still have this bike. It’s been upgraded from stock with modern dual-pivot brakes. I’m asking $125 to getting it out of my garage.

The wheels are handbuilt by Bill Mould (Spokes) and only about a year old.
If you have a spare set of wheels (even ones you can borrow from another bike), you should be able to test this relatively easily. If the pings happen while coasting, you don’t even need to readjust the derailleur (although you might want to make sure at least one brake works).
ronwalfParticipantBowie to Archives (or Navy Yard, for that matter) isn’t that bad. I’ve ridden most of those streets. The trip also comes within a short distance of pit stops at Greenbelt, College Park, and probably several others (I’ll be riding from Greenbelt).
cclittle007, do you have a route in mind from Upper Marlboro?

Sorry, pi is irrational and its decimal representation will certainly not fit on a postcard.
No, no, we’ve got this covered.

Your maintenance costs are $0.10/mile, so how does it cost you more than $3.00 for 25 miles?
Biking at a steady 15mph consumes energy at the rate of about 22 miles per whopper (with cheese). My commute is 30 miles (RT) by car (Corolla, avg 36mpg), and 43 miles by bike. The GPS estimates about 1800 Calories per commute. Even using the lower whopper estimate (1500 Calories), I’d have to be creative to compensate that energy deficit with $2 in food without suffering gastronomic distress (noooo, not a cup of canola oil!).

No, I think that forecast merits a bit more aggressive solutions. I am installing spikes.
It’s not too late to go all Mad Max.
or you can just take to the river.
ronwalfParticipantIf I could find a boat anchor for under $5, I’d offer it to the leading person who’s last on their team (currently Peter DeNitto).
ronwalfParticipantMe: The cyclist starting through the intersection after coming to a full stop
You: The SUV blowing through
Me: Singing “Yo, stop sign” in a tad-operatic voiceI… I’m not sure why I did that.
ronwalfParticipantGiro Alpineduro boots after their first commute. The soles are quite grippy, which is more than I can say for most cycling shoes I’ve tried. The 47s fit well even though Giro claims it’s equivalent to a US 12.75 (I normally wear a US 12 or 11.5).

If you select a size and width, it jumps up significantly (up to 25 gbp for 700c).

Hm, no, that’s not it. I’m really not sure what Schwalbe tire it is. Any guesses? The Marathon Winters are going for $76 a pair.
