ParticipantThere are a number of federal agencies doing great things. If your agency has not already, think about joining the Interagency Task Force of Bicycle and Active Transportation (Fedbikes) See http://www.fedbikes.org for more info

ParticipantBecause someone asked, here are the latest scores. These are local teams that I have identified, but their “National” scores so that scores from both the north side and the south side of the city count. This should be visible at

ParticipantUnfortunately the area is rife with college students jogging from GTown and GW, who have all but no sense of trail etiquette. Up on the Custis I had a crazy ivan – walked to the right to cross and then doubled back deciding she needed to mash the cross walk button – who cursed as I went by yelling “watch watch watch” As was said in the movie, “We must give this American a wide berth.” The ninja’s will learn fast hopefully. Only thing you can do is steer clear, go slow, and not let it get to you. After all, you’re on a bicycle!!! 😎

ParticipantBaird Automotive in Clarendon. Guy is fantastic. And the guy is a cyclist.
I have repeatedly been told by garages and by my dealership, “you need this expensive thing done.” Go to Baird. Baird says nope, you just need X done. And he does the work for a fraction of the cost. He does not do unnecessary, rack up the bills, work. His work is quality. He will keep at it until it is right (I had a problem with my AC that took a couple of tries, but he was persistent…. and fixed it without replacing the whole system which was the standard recommendation). Been going to him for years. Baird is also near the metro / Custis making it easy to drop the car.

ParticipantMy reaction was the same. The letter reads like a shameful passing of the buck. Every single one of the things identified is the organizers responsibility as an event organizer.
Too many people showed up? Why did you over subscribe? There was construction on the course? Did you go over the course the day before and plan for contingent detours? The police did not know what to do in a situation? Did you properly brief and work with the police?
This is what an event organizer does. The organizer needs to know what the organization can handle, plan contingency plans, and brief key figures. And at the end of the day, dont make excuses. Planning events is hard. No doubt. But there is a reason why large events require professional event planners.

ParticipantWander aimlessly among pitstops until someone feels sorry for me and gives me a t-shirt? Advice appreciated.
In past years, I’ve had no prob. Just walk up and they are throwing T shirts out to the crowd. Not a big thing. “Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Please consult a financial ad visor.”

ParticipantI love your compassion. I have returned many lost dogs in my time to their owners (and I encourage everyone to bike over to Lost Dog Rescue adoption events and adopt a dog).
That said, in that moment, you are confronted (a) with a dog that is demonstrating territorial aggression and (b) a negligent dog owner that has failed to keep the dog fenced in on their property.
That is a threat. Your only responsibility in that moment is for your own well being. There is nothing about that moment that suggests that it would be safe for you to turn around and attempt to ensure the safety of that dog.
That said, if the dog is not demonstrating territorial aggression, I would probably stop and try to get the dog safely home.

ParticipantWABA didn’t organize the ride
That is a distinction that will be lost on a lot of people. I am hearing a lot of grumbling about BikeDC

ParticipantOuch Greenbelt. What did you do at mile 3.5? Fall off a bridge?

ParticipantMy understanding is that police interpret the law the way baiskeli is stating it. A ped should not enter the cross walk until it is clear; and cars are under no obligation to stop until the ped is actually in the cross walk (standing on the side of the road does not count).

ParticipantI would seriously suggest that there are low hanging fruit solutions that could be implemented that would not cost $8 m. There is the simple of installing bollards, to the more complex of realigning the roads. The roads are spagetti there bc there were designed when the primary road was Rt 50. When Rt 66 was installed, everything was rearranged. And in the decades and decades since Rt 66, NPS has refused to untangle that mess (NB to Rt 50 goes under the memorial bridge for almost no reason – realign that, and you could have a full width bike path under the bridge). Now note, they have done major renovations of that area, basically rebuilding to the status quo. Memorial circle was renovated just a few years ago. They reduced it from like three lanes to two lanes, with a side brick lane thing on the side.
When the renovations are going to occur anyways, doing redesign to make the route safer is all but a deminimis cost.
