We have had difficulties identifying a DC location.
We would be happy to identify a more suitable spot for the final happy hour, if anyone would like to volunteer to search for one.I think Virginia but more centralized is still doable if DC isn’t an option. What was the place we went to in Crystal City in 2020? Just across the river would be okay.

ParticipantI appreciate the volunteer aspect of this game, but this is waaay non-centralized for being on a work night. Again.

Participant1/1/23 – Fire
This fire station is down the street from my house. On the days leading up to Christmas every year they put lights all over one of their engines and escort Santa down every neighborhood road.

ParticipantAt long last, it is time to announce the winner of the “beauty” contest portion of this scavenger hunt.
We had a lot of fun being arbitrary and capricious – to a certain point. Rumi and I judged most of the days, but sometimes we called in guest judges. What were the standards by which we judged? Well, arbitrary and capricious, of course.
But seriously, for me it was often looking through the photos, figuring out which ones sparked a certain emotion in me upon immediately viewing it, and then figuring out exactly why I felt that emotion.
- For instance, when Indiana submitted a picture of the sun for her sphere entry, I was surprised and amused!
- Camiller and catedrew made me laugh with their waterway entries.
- I felt an adrenaline rush when I saw AlanA’s 18% grade photo for roadway.
- DCAKen’s equating of a School sign to Pisces for his entry was creative.
- Bigredboiler kept wowing us with mountains, like his national park entry.
- Serdar’s submission for war memorial included a really clear shot of the constellation Orion.
- Nadine found a bright teal house in a line of somewhat monochromatic houses for her painted lady entry.
Etc. etc. etc.! If you haven’t read the reasons why we chose different photos, make sure that you check it out on the tally calendar.
TWO people chose the beauty prize option for their 19 March submission. My panel of bikey people who are not participating in Freezing Saddles chose Serdar’s photo as the winner of that day.

This is a really cool shot! Serdar was already one point behind the lead, and thanks to the extra 5 points, he came out on top and won!
Congratulations, Serdar! Your prize is a piece of art by me! I will be creating this within the next month and reaching out to you for info on how to get it to you.
Thank you, everyone! We had a lot of fun judging all of your photos in this scavenger hunt.

3/18/2022 – Cool house

A cool house I found on my ride today was this one with stained window glasses.Hate to burst your bubble, Serdar, but that’s a film you can buy at Home Depot to make your windows look like stained glass. I chuckle, because it’s the same pattern that I used to solve a problem with my bathroom window being too easy to see through with curtains alone. Lol.

ParticipantFreezing Saddles 2022 Scavenger Hunt Bonus Day!

FS2022 is drawing to a close, and there is conveniently one day that does not fall within a weekly theme, so we’re making it bonus day! As with the rest of the competition, there are two options – the daily participation prize, and the “beauty” prize. But note – your ONE submission on this day will only count for ONE of the two options.
What does this mean? It means that you must tell us in your forum post for 19 March WHICH option you are going for. We will only consider you for ONE option. You should include in your forum post either:
• March 19: Daily Participation Prize; or
• March 19: Beauty PrizeGood news: You will have until the end of 20 MARCH to submit your final photo in the forum.
Now, for the details.
If you want to compete for the daily participation prize bonus, you will earn a point for EACH item from the following list in ONE photograph:
- Oblate Spheroid
- Flowering Tree
- Wine
- Crosswalk
- St. Patrick’s Day
- Moon
- Embassy
- Chemistry
- Indigo
- Independent Bakery
- Art Deco Architecture
- Bicycle
For instance, if you find an Irish shamrock (I’m going to warn you now that we will not tolerate 4-leaf clovers for St. Patrick’s Day) in front of the Embassy of Sweden, and both your bicycle and a crosswalk are in the picture as well, you earn 4 points.
This means that you have the potential for 12 bonus points in the daily participation contest if you choose this option.
One item cannot count for two items on the list (an indigo oblate spheroid only counts for one item, for example). And of course you cannot submit items that you bring with you on your bike ride (we will make an exception for your own bicycle, but nothing else).
I recommend telling us which items you have in your photo. Make it obvious.
Everyone who chooses to submit a photo for the daily participation competition will receive points for their submission.
Don’t forget that you must include “#scavhunt” in your Strava title. If you want to compete for bonus points in the “beauty” prize, you simply must submit:
The most beautiful, cool, striking, artsy-fartsy photograph of a bicycle EVER conceived by man – according to our anonymous panel of judges.
Prize: 5 points.
Only ONE person who competes for this option will receive the bonus points.IMPORTANT: Don’t forget to tell us which option you are submitting for and may the canniest seeker win.

Participant1/24/2022 Bridge
This bridge which has an annoying curvature to it connects Berwyn Heights and Lake Artemesia here in PG County. The first picture that I took had the bicycle on the left side. But then I realized… oh yeah, maybe I should take this picture instead with the bicycle on the right side.

I give up! If my donut picture didn’t win picture of the day, I will never win. I’ll just stick to posting on Strava and not bother with this part of the game.
Just want to mention that we are on day 21 out of 78, and only one person has gotten 3 points, whereas there are tons of people with only one point in the “beauty” competition. Still anyone’s game, but please do what makes you happy.
