Can I improve on this without equipment and a training regimen by simply changing my mix of home exercise or is there no way around signing up for a gym membership?

    I recommend a 35-pound bike and a vertical bike rack, myself ;)

This is a great thread, seriously. Now that I am getting back to exercising I need to incorporate some weight training. I’d like to start swimming again too – when I did masters swimming before I had decent form but absolutely no power.

I made it to Friday Coffee Club today! People were nice and said hello to me. :) I am now on the Twitters as @KelOnWheelsVA so as to keep up with #fridaycoffeeclub.

Great ride in, it was a beautiful morning. I felt like I could do 10 more miles. Riding on the plaza behind the White House is ridiculous fun, I was riding in circles and going “wheeeeeeee” to myself :D

Encountered a clueless SUV at a stop sign – I had the lane, stopped at the sign, he stopped behind me, and I signaled that I was going to turn left, which apparently in SUV-speak means “Hey, why don’t you just pull around me and go first because that’s TOTALLY how traffic works with the second person in line going first and all,” but fortunately I was kind of expecting him to do that, so I didn’t start my turn and get run over. :)

I might do a Hains Point loop on the way home, I’ll see how I feel when I get there :D

I suspect that you actually meant the Arlington water treatment plant on Glebe Road. There used to be a bike path between the Alexandria water treatment plant and the Beltway, but it was closed years ago.

One of those A places :D

Eek! Glad you are OK! I bet you are VERY AWAKE now.

Props to the nice truck driver.

My former running coach also does massage therapy and lots of wellness stuff and is AWESOME. He’s out in Herndon or Reston or somewheres out there in the wild west, if anyone out that way is looking for someone to go to.

Oh wait, Cipollini’s making a comeback!

Olympic commuting would be a great sport though. Throw some stoplights, potholes, crosswalks, pedestrians and cars onto the road race course, and every time the riders go round the circuit, rearrange all the traffic cones and construction signs.

    Very sad indeed.

Interesting helmet debate spurred by the incident; some good comments: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2182586/Bradley-Wiggins-knows-lot-cycling-But-wrong-safety-benefits-wearing-helmet.html

My smell of the ride??? The smell of Blue Plains while biking over the 14th Street bridge when the wind is wrong. If you practice, you can hold your breath the entire way over the bridge!!

Now see, I can get that AND the Alexandria water treatment plant! Awesome on a hot day!

On the other hand, there was the magical burger smell in Shirlington last night that was amaaaazing.

I was thinking about this thread earlier as I was walking to lunch…

(IMPORTANT DISCOVERY: There is a CaBi station by the Penn Quarter Five Guys. There is probably some Important Historical Washington Stuff over there too, but whatev. French fries.)

… and it nicely illustrates the importance of explaining why one is asking a question.

Had I only asked how to get from the Pentagon to the 14th St Bridge and not mentioned why I wanted to know, then I would not have gotten the information I really needed.

This has been a public service announcement. (With guitar.)

Although it is too late to remedy this heinous oversight this year, we should all be sure to compensate next year. In the meantime, we should all take this opportunity to regroup and PRACTICE drinking copious amounts of IPA in preparation for next year.

    Olympic Cat 6 racing!

Speaking of which, somebody just won ANOTHER gold medal. Jeez, shouldn’t they cut that guy off?

    Kel,

A much easier way to increase your distance is to make a loop or two at Hains Point (is it 2.75 miles each loop?)

As you’re coming into town, just take a left on the sidewalk at the DC end of the 14th St. Bridge (George Mason Memorial Bridge for you sticklers out there) and keep following it around to the left.

See the Arlington Bike map for details. It’s very easy to get right back onto the route to work. I do a loop or two or three from time to time on my way home. It’s a pleasant ride.

Oh, that’s a great idea :) As a lapsed runner, I usually try to block the existence of Hains Point out of my mind. (It’s SO BORING to run on. SOOOOO BORING.)
