Finally finished the build of my disc-brake road bike that I started back in October. Sadly I have only had an opportunity to ride it around the neighborhood while fine-tuning fit. Maybe tomorrow I can take it for a proper spin. Initial impressions are that it is a fantastic bike. I love the disc brakes.

ParticipantQuote:Averaging together the different simulations of the GFS model (ensemble), it shows the D.C. area staying below freezing for an incredible 9 straight days – from January 21 to 30 […] The potential for a more severe cold snap exists between around January 26-28. That’s around the time when both the operational GFS and European model show a huge piece of the polar vortex crashing south into Canada with tentacles extending deep into the U.S., not dissimilar to the January 7-8 event.(link)

guga31bb sighting (I think) yesterday going thru the Marriott parking lot and onto the Custis. Whoever it was came out a bit in front of me and I immediately thought, “I want to own that bike.” Then I thought I recalled having seen it on the postpicsofyourbike thread and made the connection. If it wasn’t you, then there are two of those beauties riding around. Anyways, I lost you at a light so couldn’t catch up to say hi, but maybe next time.
Yep that was me! I remember a person watching me as I was coming out of the parking lot onto Custis. I was doing a kind of awkward should-I-slow-down so it didn’t seem like I was trying to cut you off as I merged onto Custis, but then I think you slowed down, too.
Oh wait, I had my camera — here’s the moment preserved forever ~

ParticipantI rode Custis with TK last night! He didn’t leave me in the dust but I think he was taking it easy

ParticipantOne trip to Cherrydale Hardware for a file later, success! Thanks guys!!

ParticipantTerrible image quality but…did I see a fox on Custis today?

ParticipantThanks guys! It’s a lot easier to buy a file than a whole new freehub body (is something like this what I would need?). And I’m pretty sure I had the spline things lined up right — I managed to move the older cassette to a different freehub, so I like to think I sort of know what I’m doing…
And yes, in the future I’ll make sure my cap nut is tight enough…
While searching I also noticed the wheel manufacturer even mentions the notching problem: http://www.boydcycling.com/freehub-body/

Trying to figure out the logistics for my 2 week vacation in February, but I’m shooting for the “Rider who circumnavigated a country” prize, trying to get in a long ride or two in Grand Cayman. Looking like I’ll have to pack my bike as the prospects for a road bike rental seems to be “none” or “rip off the stupid tourist”.

How does one pack a bike for a trip like that?

ParticipantOnly saw two other cyclists on this morning’s commute. Custis was surprisingly passable.

Team Rusty Studs likely will not win the speed prize this year because of me. Haha.
The only team we’re beating is the slacker team. I don’t know if Rusty Studs is going to win any prizes at all

ParticipantThanks for posting the icy river pics — these are really neat.

Participant^ I really could have used ski goggles like that — my sunglasses got fogged up the moment I put them on, so I had to take them off.

ParticipantI also overdressed and even stopped at the top of the Custis corkscrew to take off my outer jacket. Apparently 3 wool layers and 2 jackets was a bit much. I guess it’s better to err on the side of too much clothing than too little, though.
