(I promise the view facing the other direction is similar — no houses, buildings, structures, streets).

Now that I’ve resolved the issues associated with ridiculously tight fit of my tires on my wheels, I’m back to where I was with a previous bike, i.e., I think of swapping out regular tires for studded tires on my one wheelset practice for fixing flats. Thanks to good tires, I don’t have to do that often (knock on wood). It only takes me 5 or 10 minutes to swap out the tires, which still makes biking the fastest commuting option available to me. That’s not to say that I don’t want to build up a spare wheelset so that I could just swap out wheels in even less time, but changing the tires really isn’t that much of a hassle.

Yawn. Oh, the other boring. :D

And commute? What commute?! Suckers! Actually, today was so beautiful, I’m kinda bummed I didn’t have to commute, since riding didn’t happen just for the hell of it.

And in December you will be able to add Emma’s, on Hume Avenue near Commonwealth, to the list.

Had no idea. Not a big wine or espresso person, but I like the variety it adds to the businesses, especially up at that end of the Avenue.

Yeah. Seems like as long as the threading meshes, you’ll be all right.

You may have already checked with him, but Sheldon always has some info. The article is outdated, but then again, so are your cranks. ;) Good luck.

The same pair of which I’m pretty sure went on my Fargo last winter. They took me uphill on ice on the Custis once, even.

Indeed. Glad they served you well!

Last friday was my first commute home after the time change – IE my first commute almost entirely after dark.

With proper lighting and a little getting used to, I find that riding in the dark is one of life’s simple pleasures, especially on trails where I don’t have to worry so much about cars not seeing me.

Pretty sure those are the ones I had on my 700c wheeled LHT back in the day. They should serve you well! :)

$5-6 in various nuts, washers, bolts, PVC to make this little DIY light mount to get my main headlight off my handlebars and lower down onto my front rack to better illuminate the road. It’s still a bit of a work in progress, but tonight will be its maiden check ride. :)

Haven’t done it yet, but I’ve thought of doing something similar to jump start a potential multi-day bike trip to Hampton Roads at some point, just going to Fredericksburg and riding from there south. I can see you already came across the VRE bike policy page. Can’t offer anything more on that particular count.

As for alternate ways down there, check out ridewithgps.com, go to Plan a Route, and enable to the OSM Cycling layer. You’ll see US Bike Route 1 mapped out. It follows the MVT from DC to Mount Vernon and then roads and sidepaths from there. Should do the trick. IIRC, USBR 1 goes right past the forest.

I pretty much go through the Circle only at lunchtime if I make a run to Trader Joe’s. I have ambivalent feelings about the lights there. At lunch I can usually Idaho stop them and make it through the Circle, perhaps with less traffic around me than before they made whatever changes they made.

Part of me thinks that lights at a traffic circle kind of defeat the purpose, but that’s another thread, I suppose.

Speaking of which, gotta go. ;)
