It sounds like you need to take some time away. The only hope for addiction is going cold turkey. It’s really not healthy being that addicted to freezingsaddles.com. It leads to nothing good. Get away, go some place warm, find a beach. Leave your bike behind, it’ll only trigger the addiction.
Cold turkey? Really cold turkey? AKA ____A PENGUIN___!!! [emoji1]

ParticipantHello everyone! cyclingfool here, AKA Eric. I live in Del Ray in Alexandria and work at Trader Joe’s in Bailey’s Crossroads as a mate (assistant manager). Working retail management means my schedule is all over the place and involves long hours, which is to say that:
1. I will most likely be unavailable for any FS-related get togethers; and
2. You’ll notice lots of rides at weird times of day like 3am commutes to work or 1am commutes home.Sadly, between work hours and family commitments commuting makes up almost all my miles, with some occasional errands or kidical rides sprinkled in. Even sleaze rides can be hard to work in, but I’ll do my best to get do some for the team and for fun.
I will put in a solid four to five days a week commuting about six miles each way for sure, more as possible.
I also enjoy bike touring and camping. I did Pittsburgh to DC last summer and try to work in an overnight or two on the C&O in the summer, though those kinds of miles are not likely to come during the course of Freezing Saddles.
I think this is my fourth FS. I look forward to winter riding, getting to know you all a little, at least virtually, and to having fun with FS! Go Penguins (though not in the NHL sense of that phrase)!!!

ParticipantIcy patches on 4MR between Shirlington and West Glebe, but navigable most likely, even without studs, which I still had on,so I breezed right through. W&OD was clear from Shirlington to Columbia Pike. Hopefully today’s sun and warmer temps will make this discussion a thing of the past for a while.

ParticipantA little dicey tonight on my way home from work on the short segment of FMR I rode from Shirlington under 395 over to West Glebe. Roads were all good everywhere, but there was a thin layer of ice on the cement parts of the trail leading to and from the underpass. No doubt that Sunday’s sun and 40 degrees temps will take care of it, but don’t be caught unawares salt in the day on Sunday before it warms up.

ParticipantTired of unwieldy battery packs on the cheap, though pretty bright, Chinese headlights, and their need for a special charger, I splurged on a Cygolite 1100 Metro Pro headlight last week. Charges using standard micro USB… I’ve got a couple dark rides under my belt with it now and am very pleased, though I still want to replace it eventually with dynamo lighting.

ParticipantNot sure where a 2:30 am ride home from work falls on the morning or evening commute spectrum, but here’s my startle from last night/this morning… A fox scurrying across the road no more than five feet in front of me as I was riding down Four Mile Run Drive parallel to the W&OD across the vacant lot from WETA. Near miss.
I was ready to fall asleep on my ride home despite the cool temperatures and being on my bike after a very long day at work, but the sound of running paws and the almost collision with a fox darting out from the parked cars and almost taking me out got my blood flowing in a jiffy.

ParticipantHopefully this link has the answers to your questions. I think the service is offered year round.
This linked podcast episode has some good info and practical experience shared as well.
Cheers!

ParticipantChecking in. This is my third year doing Freezing Saddles. I used to be a lot more active on the forum but a combination of life circumstances and the fact that I no longer have a desk job and the opportunity to fill voids in my day by checking in on the forum mean I am not as active as I used to be, much to my chagrin (but I digress).
I’m a regular year-round commuter (Del Ray to Clarendon at the moment), but rarely have the opportunity to ride otherwise. I’ve been riding thus far in 2016, though I haven’t uploaded to Strava in a couple weeks. I just joined the Strava group for our team. I’m looking forward to this year’s FS.
Cheers teammates! Let’s go, Big 12!

ParticipantSo… first off. Hello everyone. I haven’t been on the forums in ages. My apologies. I trust you enjoyed my absence.
Secondly, and more importantly, I am trying to sign up for FS16. The registration form won’t accept my Strava number (83324), which is only five digits long. The form keeps insisting my Strava number have 6 digits (“at least 111111”). I tried adding a leading 0 so that the number was six digits long, but it still won’t take it. Suggestions???

ParticipantSince I started commuting regularly to Clarendon from Del Ray, I go up Kenmore just about every time I go to work. I’ve generally found it to be a gentle and quiet route, though in my experience, the most likely to break that peace there and do something borderline stupid in terms of a pass are Metrobuses, so I am sadly not surprised that a Metrobus was involved.
Hope no one was hurt, though that bike doesn’t look like it could have fared too well.
