ParticipantJust tempering expectations here – if I recall correctly this is only going to connect over to Route 1 for now – the connection back to the Potomac Yard Trail won’t come until the park itself is built in 2025.

ParticipantBluemont Junction Trail aficionados may want to take a gander at this SusMo Alert on the Ballston Holiday Inn Redevelopment proposal. The feedback window runs through Thur 8/4

ParticipantThe Four Mile Run Trail detour for the Dominion Substation project (while they build the boardwalk) looks just about ready to go (temp PBL on Glebe, expanded Route 1 sidewalk). I had no problem navigating it on the box bike. The closure hasn’t actually begun yet, was estimated as July 25th last I saw.

ParticipantBeware this sudden, unsigned bike lane closure at the bottom of the hill, around the blind curve on Shirlington Road (already reported to the County). Props to the ART Bus Driver next to me who was clearly alert to the problem I was facing and ready to let me merge into the travel lane.

ParticipantWe’re a go for this evening and the weather looks great. Plenty of room if folks want to register last-minute!
June 8, 2022 at 7:00 pm in reply to: What to do with video of dangerous driver at signaled crosswalk in Arlington? #1121693chris_s
ParticipantI just wanted to share that the county is proposing to add a project to its Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) to upgrade the Glebe & 9th St intersection, including adding a full traffic signal. That plan is in draft form, there will be a public hearing at the end of June and then a final plan will be adopted in July.
This project was one of the priorities we rode for at Bike4ThePike back in 2018 and it’s great to see some potential progress on it.
One positive potential use of the video is emailing it to the County Board along with a note about the dangers you have experienced at this intersection and encouraging them to move this project up in the Capital plan to happen faster (though I’m not 100% clear on its current schedule, to be honest).

What’s the difference between a major and minor bike trail? For example, the Anacostia Trail north of East Capitol Street is designated a major trail, but is minor south of there. Why is the towpath in Georgetown east of 31st Street included as a minor trail, but west of 31st to Fletcher’s Boathouse isn’t? West of Fletcher’s it’s a major trail.
I’m basing it off of how they’re tagged in Open Street Map, which is wildly inconsistent at this point. Moving in this direction will require a fair amount of data cleanup (for instance all of the Wakefield Park Mountain Bike Trails were tagged like PBLs until I fixed it a couple of days ago) but is something the community can fix itself rather than asking some underpaid employee in the jurisdiction GIS office to do it.
I’m displaying as major trails anything tagged as a “cycleway” and displaying as minor anything tagged as a “footway” or “path”.

ParticipantI’m in the process of rebuilding dcbikemap.com to use OpenStreetMap bike facility data rather than jurisdictional data (since they’re almost universally terrible at making updates). This would allow the community to make its own updates and fixes (at least anyone willing to put in the time and effort to learn how to update OpenStreet Map).
Here’s how it currently looks: https://dcbikemap.com/v2.html

ParticipantConstruction has finally begun on the extension of the Hayes St PBL to Eads along 18th
Landmark Block construction will add a block of eastbound PBL on Clarendon Blvd, a block of westbound PBL on Wilson Blvd, a block of southbound PBL (at sidewalk level) on N Courthouse Rd, and a block of unprotected paint-only bike lane on N Courthouse Rd (and fix the narrow sidewalk in front of California Tortilla)
January 24, 2022 at 3:27 am in reply to: Potomac Yard – Four Mile Run Trail Connection Construction #1117581chris_s
ParticipantA point of clarification, this won’t really connect to the Potomac Yard Trail until they build the park at some later date. This phase 1 trail connection connects to the Route 1 side only.
