Please come join us for a happy hour at the Capital City Brewing Company in Shirlington on Thursday, July 12, starting around 5:30 p.m. Spouses and other family members, friends, new and potential cyclists and bike commuters, and lurkers on the forum are all welcome. Beers are $2 all evening. Many appetizers will be provided and additional ones are available for $5 until 7 p.m. We may hold this indoors this time, depending on weather, so if you don’t see us outside, please just ask the host or hostess to guide you to the biking group.

Cap City Brewing Co., located at 4011 Campbell Ave., Arlington, VA, phone 703-578-3888, is very easily accessible by bike trail (see google maps biking directions) or by car or bus. Ample free close-by car parking is available in various garages in Shirlington Village after 5 p.m. In addition, Shirlington Transit Station, a nearby bus hub, is only about a quarter block from the restaurant, and anyone getting off the bus with you will be able to easily point you in the right direction. If further directions are needed, please contact me by private message or on the forum and I would be glad to help.

Those who can stay later (after 8 p.m.) are invited to join us in watching Stage 11 of the Tour de France, described by Jean-Francois Pescheux on the TDF website as follows: “One of the shortest stages in the 99th edition. But riders beware, it is a tough one! The course is simple: after the first thirteen kilometres from Albertville, the peloton will be hard pressed to find a single inch of flat terrain! The cyclists will tackle La Madeleine, La Croix de Fer and Le Mollard, one after the other before the final climb up La Toussuire. Let me tell you, the final podium will start to take shape on the finish line here! Those who falter in this stage will get no second chances. The winner will not be known yet, but the losers certainly will.”

It’s helpful to know if you plan to come, but not absolutely necessary. Hope you can join us!

They’re very happy to have us back, and we can set up anywhere there that we like.

I’m torn about outside vs. inside to start with (5:30 to ?), although we’ll have to go inside once we overflow available patio seating (usually about 12-14 people, since they need to accommodate other customers too) and for the TdF. Any preferences? Check weather before answering.

Tour isnt scheduled to reair until much later. Is there anyway that they can record it and have it playing while we are there??

Outside! I would think they would want stinky sweaty cyclists outside.

Actually I think we should have a few of us read the race report and re-enact the day’s stage through the magic of interpretive dance. :D

For the interpretive dance, do bike laps around Shirlington climbing to Fairlington and back with the sprint finish to the library plaza?

Way too literal. We need to get to express the inner feelings and soul of the TdF…. preferably without the use of performance-enhancing drugs… with the probable exception of beer. Massive beer intake helps get to the soul of any interpretive dance. Funky Chicken, Running Man and Hulk moves are completely appropriate, however. They should be the starting point from which the dance depicting any sprint-related parts of the race would stem forth.

(No. I did not drink my lunch today.)

    Love,

    Pete

I’m thinking big men in lycra pirouetteing around the main bar.

Exactly the kind of thing I think Shirlington needs.

I’m thinking Shirlington might need signal flags D, V, X and W to fully warn other patrons and the innocent.

So what’s bike parking like there? Sounds like there could be as many as 30 bikes, which is way more than usual racks can hold. Is it ok if we lock up next to any old pole/tree/lamp/sign?

I vote for a “pop up” bike rack right in the first parallel parking space, as a way of demonstrating how many bikes you can fit into a single car spot.

I say we roll up and take every spot we can in front of Cap City, biker-gang style.

There are only a couple of inverted U racks in the general vicinity. You will see bikes locked to whatever is fixed and doesn’t move. Please avoid locking to trees – anyway, the tree trunks are too big for a U-lock anyway.

I second this. Shirlington does have bike racks but they are not evenly dispersed and don’t always meet demand so people use whatever they can find. Fortunately there are lots of light poles, benches, and other metal bits around. It’s a very safe neighborhood; very yuppy with lots of people walking around.

But there are Inverted U’s spread about – there is a whole series down the block at the library. And there are Us spread about. So look for them. But Shirlington is bike-friendly meaning that there will already be a lot of bikes there. Shirlington is also dog friendly…. so someone bring there dog to guard the bikes!
