Please come join us for a happy hour at the Capital City Brewing Company in Shirlington on Thursday, July 12, starting around 5:30 p.m. Spouses and other family members, friends, new and potential cyclists and bike commuters, and lurkers on the forum are all welcome. Beers are $2 all evening. Many appetizers will be provided and additional ones are available for $5 until 7 p.m. We may hold this indoors this time, depending on weather, so if you don’t see us outside, please just ask the host or hostess to guide you to the biking group.

Cap City Brewing Co., located at 4011 Campbell Ave., Arlington, VA, phone 703-578-3888, is very easily accessible by bike trail (see google maps biking directions) or by car or bus. Ample free close-by car parking is available in various garages in Shirlington Village after 5 p.m. In addition, Shirlington Transit Station, a nearby bus hub, is only about a quarter block from the restaurant, and anyone getting off the bus with you will be able to easily point you in the right direction. If further directions are needed, please contact me by private message or on the forum and I would be glad to help.

Those who can stay later (after 8 p.m.) are invited to join us in watching Stage 11 of the Tour de France, described by Jean-Francois Pescheux on the TDF website as follows: “One of the shortest stages in the 99th edition. But riders beware, it is a tough one! The course is simple: after the first thirteen kilometres from Albertville, the peloton will be hard pressed to find a single inch of flat terrain! The cyclists will tackle La Madeleine, La Croix de Fer and Le Mollard, one after the other before the final climb up La Toussuire. Let me tell you, the final podium will start to take shape on the finish line here! Those who falter in this stage will get no second chances. The winner will not be known yet, but the losers certainly will.”

It’s helpful to know if you plan to come, but not absolutely necessary. Hope you can join us!

Shirlington is a terrific location, thanks for choosing it.

I will certainly be there, wouldn’t miss it.

Here is a photo “map” of how to get to Cap City Brewery in Shirlington from the MVT heading south from George Mason Bridge. In a nutshell, whenever you reach a fork in the trail or a road intersection, turn LEFT. Every single time. This posting is in two parts. The turns are in order reading from left to right.

Thank you. I appreciate all the effort that took. Especially in this heat.

I’ll still get lost. Just wait.

    Ann,
Not to worry. I’ll post some good directions in a couple of days. Shirlington and Cap City are very easy to find and get to from either the W&OD, or by taking Four Mile Run trail from the Mt. Vernon Trail (as shown in KLizotte’s photos). For you, it would probably be easier just toshoot down the W&OD.

Anyone going to start a convoy for our western brethren? Or is Ann going to be on four wheels?

Consularrider, I am forever indebted to you for getting me back to the starting point of the Mardi Gras Parade last February. But for your help I’d still be circling Arlington looking for my car. I realize you know the depth of my directional ineptitude. But I’m pretty sure I can find this and I’ll bring extra lights.

The first post in this thread has been updated to provide more information. Please let me know if anyone has any questions and I’ll be glad to help.

For those who have already let me know that you are coming, there’s no need to respond again. For others, it would be helpful to know if you’re coming (and how many additional people you might bring), but not necessary. We’d be happy to see you regardless! And please don’t hesitate to come just because you don’t know anyone in the group yet – we’ll be sure to make you feel welcome!

I replaced my broken headlight yesterday to make sure I can make it home afterwards. I’ll be there.

*cough* It would reflect badly on me to admit a friend and I recently closed the place down. So instead I’ll talk about how great One, Two Kangaroo – the toy store is and how I found a great tin tea set and a pink umbrella for Tour De Fat.

I spoke to management at Cap City last night, and it’s a near certainty that we can have our own viewing room for the TdF on Thursday if we want it! :)

I should be able to make it this time, But I will be huffing it the 20 miles straight from work on my road bike in full kit (clown suit)… should make for a fun entrance for the locals (I’m reminded of a scene from “The Flying Scotsman”). Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Look on the bright side – it will be easy for the host/hostess to direct you to your party.

I’ll be there but somewhat late, probably near 7:30-ish, and quite possibly completely drenched in sweat.

That’s the best way to come – you’ll fit right in! Coming by car and in street clothes is fine as well, and you won’t be alone in that if you do. Feel free to bring friends along too if you would like to.

I have about a 10 year supply of Costco unscented wipes. Will bring some packages along in case anyone wants a quick clean up.
