    Good to see you, @Tania.

Yes, this morning reminded me that I love my Endura Venturi jacket. It comfortable and dry for the full 1:10 this AM and cool enough with all the zippers. Best of all it has an integrated glasses cleaning cloth; that came in quite handy. And I love the Northwave Artics [sic]; they really are waterproof, they weren’t lying. With short gaiters, my feet were completely dry.

My luck has been that GoreTex gloves stay dry inside for about 40 minutes. And my Showers Pass Elite pants soak through at the knees after about 30 minutes. “Waterproof”.

It was really pretty out west.

Totally agree on the Northwave boots. I just went on an 11 mile lunchtime ride, purposefully riding through all the snow and slop I could find (the golf course was good for that!), and while the rest of me was soaked, my feet were quite dry when I got home. The Northwave boots are the best bike related purchase that I’ve made in a long time.

Question on the Northwave Artics, how are they sized? Did you buy your usual size, or did you size up? Can you get a thick pair of wool socks in them without constricting your toes?

I had to size up for thick socks. I also concur on their waterproofness. My feet still get cold on longer rides in below freezing temps, but they do stay dry.

I went one size up and can wear a thick pair of wool socks with a thin pair of wool socks without having to cram my feet into the boot.

Couldn’t find my shoe covers or my facemask. Toes got a little chilly, but I’m still surprised at what little layering I require for sub 25F temps.

    You didn’t have a 16MPH headwind! :-)

Well, that and the studded tires! But it was cold on the face mostly.

My studded tires are on my MTB, which I rode today…neither light nor aerodynamic. Made for a long ride at 5am…

Yep, same hereā€¦ studs were like suction cups this morning heading into that wind, especially with a loaded backpack filled with groceries

That which does not kill you…
    Just sayin’.
    No studded tires.
    Knickers.
    4th ride after a 4 month break.
    Loved it.

Are you implying that you’d built up enough fat reserves over 4 months of not riding for clothing to serve a strictly cosmetic purpose in sub-freezing temps? ;-)

The ride this AM was very nice, though, I agree. Studded tires were unnecessary baggage, but what doesn’t kill you …

He neglected to mention the leather jacket and silk scarf.

Oh yeah—4 months on the motorcycle did not make me any slimmer.
But no, the black leather jacket and white silk scarf just didn’t quite work with the Surly despite being the right colors.

The sky is definitely brightening up around the edges by 6:20 and this morning was the first time it was almost light when I was rolling past the White House around 6:40.
