Another option, and this involved driving…is to drop your car off in Reston (free park and ride lot with paid lockers) and take WOD trail all the way into DC…

I have been riding my ebike almost exclusively for the past two years. Yes, I’ve been called cheater, been yelled at and scolded for riding a “motor vehicle” on the trails, but I got over that :-).
I have not commuted by car or metro for about 6 months now, and really look forward to the commute. The money I’ve saved is amazing, even after the expense of the bike. I’m not tired when I get to work, don’t need a shower, and don’t need to change clothes. If I want a workout I simply don’t use the motor. I do this on the way home usually.
The down side is that if something goes wrong with any electrical part, you either need to know how to fix it yourself, pedal a really heavy bike, or do the walk of shame. I carry a tool kit and fix stuff myself. Only issue I have had are flat tires and once in a while a wire connector needs to be replaced, but that’s also part of the fun for me…
Now, for a commute from Herndon you will need to do some research to make sure the battery will make it with about 10% charge remaining, you can’t drain the battery completely. If your interested in building the bike yourself with a kit, let me know and I’ll pm you the vendor I went with.

Please PM your vendor. Thanks in advance!

Thanks. Yeah, there is a store in NYC that sells a whole range of them, might have to go north to test them out :)

    Get a used Dahon.
I recently got a full commuter equiped Dahon for $300
Someone rode it few times, it didnt work out for them and they put it on CL.
This makes my second used Dahon.

You still need to go up the rosslyn hill, but you an avoid the rest of them. I usually get up the hill and as soon as I cross I-66, I continue straight up past bergman’s cleaners to the intersection of Lee Hwy and Veitch street (the custis trail turns right on the far side of the bridge over I-66, but I don’t). From there you have an additional short uphill. I usually turn left at Adams and make my way over to Wilson. From there you can take the bike lane on wilson to fairfax, turn right on fairfax and then head over to ballston. In order to safely get onto the bluemont, you need to be on the sidwalk on the south side of Fairfax when crossing Glebe, just continue in front of the hotel on the left, then the hwy barrier wall on the right and make a left onto the bluemont.

Something like this (google maps gave west/south glebe crossing, that works too), just don’t take the final turn that heads to the tennis courts and, instead, continue heading west on the W&OD. :)

I have recently spent a week in Germany, and I saw a ton of single speed bikes there.
Munich is relatively flat and those bikes work great there.

Is it just the low-maintenance that attracts you? Or does it offer a different (positive) riding experience?

On the Dahon its the maneuverability thats a plus as well.
    Small bike, easier in DC.

I think its a lot more exercise on a SS/Fixed, which for me is a plus.

But I ride my hybrid as well, and switching back and worth is not an issue…

I have two of them, one is Daho Mu Uno another one is Trek Gritty
I use Dahon for commuting to Reston and around DC
Biggest plus for me – very little maintenance
I do have brakes on both bikes.

Those food trucks could work the pit stops.
They are not doing anything until lunch time anyways :)

What is the best way to get from NW DC back to W&OD avoiding Curtis Trail arlington hills?
    Via Wilson Blvd? (Rosslyn-Clarendon-Balston route)
