It’s still going on. From the Vienna Police Highlights (https://www.viennava.gov/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/3342)

    Suspicious Person 16-008991
    W&OD Bike Trail
    October 20 5:17 p.m.
Sgt. Kiley received information from citizens advising of a male subject riding his bike in
proximity of the W&OD Bike Trail acting suspicious. The male was riding ahead of females,
then concealing himself and jumping out to follow them. Officers located and spoke to the man.
They recognized him as the same individual they had previously spoken to about similar
    behavior.
Sgt. Kiley notified the Director of the W&OD Trail and advised him of the on-going behavior of
the man and will follow up with him.

Ha, he got pissed they called the cops on him. Serves him right to get caught again.

I didn’t really think stalking fit the description from the first few posts, more just an aggressive ahole, but this one definitely fits the stalking definition.

I laughed aloud at the Army’s safety argument. The last time I visited, I waited 25 minutes in the heat with my daughter this summer to get on their shuttle service. I decided to walk back with her from the Columbarium, figuring the wind beat waiting a half hour for them. On my way back, one their shuttles passed us with less than two feet and no oncoming cars.

And decorum respect? They take private tour buses full of people with selfy-sticks out looking for the best photo moment. I’m happy they’re learning the history, but seriously, I think they way overblew that one.

Oh well. Now I’m going to make a point of biking and having them issue me the temporary pass each time.

Thanks all for replies–helpful in figuring it out. Hmm, well the good thing for me is doc said she had a really strong neck at 4 month checkup. So maybe I’ll wait a few months and buy a helmet to let her wear around inside some to see how she does. The plus side for me is that daycare dropoff is maybe only 1 mile from my house. But still, I want to err on the side of caution.

Since we’re on the subject, it’s killing me that I haven’t been able to bike as much with our daughter. How young can you put them in the trailer? Is it 1 year old the regular cutoff? My one day riding last week made me realize I really need (well, want, but feel need is also accurate) to be back on my bike.

To VDOT’s credit, I observed the street sweeper doing the Beacon Hill bike lane. I wrote in about it a few weeks ago after I hit a rock on uphill. Never thought they would actually do it. So I am pleasantly surprised

My Dad is an Army veteran and will end up at ANC next to Mom someday — he’s 87 and plans to live past 100.

Mom didn’t even know how to ride a bike. But both of them, presented with this “bike ban” nonsense, would tell the Department of the Army they’re out of their ever-lovin’ minds. I said as much, and more, in my comments. People can’t pay their respects to the dead looking over a wall, and exclusion based on a mode of transportation is silly. It would be reasonable to keep a perimeter around the Tomb and other sacred spaces (better yet, install bike racks so cyclists can leave the bike and go participate), but otherwise cycling may be the perfect way to tour the cemetery and its sites. It wouldn’t be hard to accomplish both and maintain the decorum.

Despite telling us specifically not to, I copied dasgeh’s first sentence (it just didn’t seem to need improvement) and ad libbed the rest. However, the form still says only 2 comments have been received, and I’m worried it got passed over. Hopefully someone on that end is actually reading them.

I think they don’t update the number of comments until the next day. Although I can’t remember the exact specifics of regulations.gov. But they’re required to accept all of the comments during the comment period and review them (which they seem to take to mean very different things). So it’s helpful when we all make our voices heard and the various walks of life we come from.

I will comment. My grandparents are in the Columbarium section. I’m not stopping each time to get a special pass and I find it offensive that they would act to ban cyclists, yet continue to drive those tour buses through. Thanks for flagging it.

Of course there are those times where one moves his bike after work to attend a happy hour, receives a ride home from the wife, switches to bag without a secondary lock, and then realizes how idiotic he is to make comments about who isn’t locking up…. 😮

A few years ago there were some bikes stollen from the very spot where you park, even though there are cameras and Capitol police just yards away.

That still baffles my mind. Then again, there was also a dead bird on the ground for a few weeks this winter, so maybe I shouldn’t be too baffled. Wonder if they even bother manning that inspection part once they switch to the new security thing at the elevator corridors. But good to keep in mind for me to always lock up. I do see a handful of bikes unlocked.

First ride with lots of headwind. Nice little dousing at the end.

I just missed the dousing. I was sitting at the light at Ft. Hunt and where Belle View becomes Beacon Hill Rd when a huge nasty strike of lightning struck. Seeing that motivated me a little more and I probably shaved my 2-3 minutes off the next 2 mile portion. As I walked into my shed with bike, the heavens unleashed. So I barely got wet, but close.

I had a driver tell me “you almost killed me” (you referring to me). My crime? Crossing Rt 1 at Memorial St along the crosswalk. Why did she say it? Because the car in front of her abruptly stopped in the road when he noticed me. But the best part? They weren’t coming from the cross street with the green light. No, they had both run the red by what had to be a flagrant 5 seconds since a car had to stop from t-boning them as well. But, of course, it’s me, the cyclist’s fault. FWIW, I unclipped and didn’t even try going in front of them despite a clear right-of-way because in my mind, anyone dumb enough to run a red light by several seconds is more than dumb enough to hit me without thinking twice. (Sadly I didn’t have my camera on :( ).

I’ve been copied on email conversations where a citizen has asked if they could clear some brush themselves for NPS. NPS said no.

Good thing I didn’t email them first.

Kind of crappy by them though given some parts of the MVT have literal bushes growing halfway into the trail at curves.

    Tim,

Is an upstanding citizen going to get in trouble for helping with trail maintenance like we are discussing, if they so choose to take it on? I live on Washington Blvd. where they planted trees a few years ago along with new sidewalks, and some of those trees have branches overhanging the bike lane. I’d like to trim them for the commuters that use the lane if I am not going to get chewed for doing it.

Golden rule: better to ask forgiveness than permission ;).

FWIW, the Park Police definitely drove by on GWMP while I was doing this at least twice and they didn’t say a word. No idea how ArlCo would treat it. I’m sure they won’t say they openly endorse it for liability reasons, but I suspect the unofficial answer on any enforcement is that it won’t exist.
