ParticipantI looked at DC.gov site for street closures during inauguration week. Are bicycles considered to be “vehicles” with regard to street closures? We have folks that bike commute to our offices within the federal triangle area. I want to know whether they will be able to get through the “red zone” on the 19th or if they need to leave their bikes at home. Any insight or historical knowledge?

It really blows if we need to take Metro on what may be a overall pleasant day. Hopefully you can at least walk the bikes. It beats getting into the office by 2:59 am.

ParticipantOur building is closed both that Thursday and Friday (in the area of Verizon Center). In fact, they state that if you’re not out of the parking garage by 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, you won’t be able to get your car out at all. I assume that’s true for bikes as well, although I’d just smuggle it out the front door if it came to that. You couldn’t pay me to ride down here that Friday. I might head to Java Shack as an alternative coffee club.

ParticipantSo — I work in the green zone, immediately adjacent to the red zone (3d and Independence, SW). My son goes to school in NE, well outside the exclusion area. He has school on Thursday, and it’s my day to drive. We can get there by going around the beltway, but… then I need to bike to the office. Anyone have any good ideas on getting from 14th and S. Dakota NE to 3d and Independence SW, given that 1) I won’t be able to cross the mall at all (so I need to go around the back side of the capitol) and 2) I’m assuming the area around Union Station/ the end of the MBT/1st NE PBL will be closed, too.
I’m also assuming that I’ll be able to bike in the green zone, but getting there will be challenging, given my office location.
It looks as though this might be an option, though I still need to figure out the end:
Any observations from the smarter-than-me people here?

You’re correct that Thursday, the area around Union Station/the end of the MBT/1st NE will be closed (there’s an event at Union Station that afternoon/evening). Since you’d have to swing east around that start point anyway (to get around the red zone), that’s probably not much of an additional obstacle. One alternative to get from the MBT to east/south of the Capitol would be to use 3rd street (may be congested) or 4th street (one-way southbound with a bike lane for parts of it) NE/SE to get from M St NE (off the MBT) down to SE.
Looking at the map (http://inauguration.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/inauguration/publication/attachments/Press-Release-Vehicle-Restrictions.pdf), Independence is in the red zone, so you may be forced to swing around much further south (e.g., I St) to get to your office.

ParticipantMy first experience with the mayhem. But I totally lucked out. Teleworking Tuesday and training in Northern Maryland Wednesday and Thursday!

Why not take the MBT, then 4th south to C, then over, kinda like this map (note there’s a “path” that looks like it connects C St to C St at the end, but Google won’t let me route you that way so it may not be real):

Google Earth says the “path” goes through “The American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial”, so if the design is at all consistent with its purpose, it should be easy to roll across to the crosswalk and pick up C St. where it continues.

What’s not clear is what streets close when, they only list a few of the timing here: https://inauguration.dc.gov/node/1212031 Typically I do take independence ave.. so I guess i’ll find out tomorrow morning…
Edit: Also according to this bicycles are permitted inside the red zone until 3am Friday morning: https://inauguration.dc.gov/node/1210112 (unless the road is closed of course)
