I look forward to meeting some or all of you at happy hour this evening!

By way of introduction, I’ve been cycling regularly since around 2014, first in Minneapolis and now here in DC. I’m something of an all-rounder: my bicycle is my car, so I’m regularly going all about the city for work, shopping, and events. I also enjoy recreational rides on roads and trails. I entered my first gravel event last summer — the Gravel Race Up Spruce Knob, which I highly recommend — and have done some bicycle camping on the C&O and in West Virginia. This is my third year in Freezing Saddles. My goal is to ride every day.

My regular commute takes me from Mt. Pleasant to/from GWU, where I’m a PhD student. If I have energy to burn in the evenings, I often do an Arlington Loop or head out to Hains Point.

Remember, Team 19 is not the only prime in the competition, just the best!

    Team 19 Infiltrator Prize

Inspired by and heavily cribbing from the Infiltrator prize Sunyata sponsored in 2017, the team member who attends the most team-specific events hosted by other teams will win glory and a pretty nice prize.

    What is a team-specific event?

    1) A BAFS team-specific happy hour planned by members of one team that is either publicly or privately posted and has a minimum of two members from the posting team;
    2) A BAFS team-specific ride of at least five miles planned by members of one team that is either publicly or privately posted and has a minimum of two members from the posting team;
    3) Any other team-specific bike-related event that is either publicly or privately posted and has a minimum of two members from the posting team.

To get credit, post to this thread 1) which team organized the event; 2) a brief description of the event; 3) a photograph; and (for rides only) a Strava link.

    Happy infiltrating!

My plan is to start blinking with the first mixing portion, dismount and switch to fade for the trail portion, and dismount to switch back to blinking for the final mixing portion. And research remote-controlled bike lights :)

Usually my blinky is mounted on my seatpost, where I can easily switch it while riding. When it’s not, I either dismount and change when I shift from road to trail and back, or I just leave it on steady the whole time. Problem with the latter is high/steady gives the shortest battery life.

The end solution to this will be a dynamo hub and good German lights.

I use my voice for this reason, but of course, that annoys some people too.

I got my bell precisely to avoid using my voice!

The Jogger’s Soliloquy (recited to me as I passed her, after ringing my bell, on the Custis near the Bridge to Nowhere):

“Why do you ring your bell when I am clearly in the right lane…(inaudible due to distance)”

There’s no real solution to this. The bells annoy some people, others (like me) nearly jump out out their pants if a bike passes without audible warning.

It’s a pretty wide road. As long as you stick to the right, cars should be able to get by you w/o much stress for either party.

It will be interesting to see whether people who did those 1.1 mile sleaze rides in past years (because that produced the maximum points per mile) will be motivated to do longer minimum rides this year.

This is definitely happening for me.

I’ll possibly stop by tonight after the snow to doublecheck Dew Drop.

You asked around a bit? Did anyone remember it?

I got there shortly after 8:30 and stayed later than was wise for a Monday night, drinking Old Overholt and soda. My Apple Watch measured the karaoke at 95 dB from my perch at the bar. I was glad to have my music earplugs. I carefully searched the area you photographed and also asked Sam, the bartender, who was bemused (and is incidentally quite good at karaoke) but knew nothing.

If you find it please assign me demerits.

It’s counted all my rides fine, and now seems to be counting yours correctly as well. I’ll take a closer look at your first few rides in the database and see what might be going on.

In the meantime, I have to say: this is a great segment! Really scenic, low-traffic, and some climbing and descent in both directions.

This is not counting all the times I’ve ridden this segment so far this year. I’ve submitted a bug report.

I noticed that and will try to figure out what might be going on.

My preference is to diagnose the issue by riding rather than by looking at code (kinetic debugging). I tested one theory last night and will test a second before the snow hits this afternoon.

I hope somebody got it. That looks like the spot. 😢

Well I got some surprisingly spirited Monday night karaoke out of it!

If Calvinball #1 does not reappear within 24 hours, I will activate a new Calvinball!

    Hi all,
I’ve never biked over to Arlington, and I’m not really sure what the connections are like from DC.

Welcome! I hope you consider joining the opening happy hour in Crystal City. It’s an easy ride from either L’Enfant or the West End, mostly on trail. Perhaps someone who works nearby would be willing to ride with you. Otherwise, the Google Maps cycling directions look pretty good: https://goo.gl/maps/48qSNjF8pQA9TbWx5

In the past I believe the photos included reference to who posted them. This year there is no attribution. Any way we can add that?

The attribution is included if the photo is clicked on. As best I remember, that’s the way it was in previous years, too.

You mean if we get a foot of snow the day before and freezing rain on the way over?

Perhaps we should establish a standing OPM snow day happy hour
