Participant“By 2025, he hopes a quarter of summer riders will choose to ride all winter long –comparable to Calgary, which according to Bebronne has retained more than 30 per cent of riders since it installed a large network of protected paths.”
Impressive. I would also be curious for a sense of what the numbers are in DC (not that our winters are comparable to Calgary’s!).
The article makes the good point that, for many of us, anyway, it’s the road conditions, not the temperatures, that are a deterrent to winter riding. It is definitely a good sign that at least some cities are recognizing this. In Minneapolis, the trails are often cleared before the roads! Winter decided to pass DC by this year, but when contemplating joining Freezing Saddles I found myself wondering how willing I would be to commute down 14th St in ice & slush, or if the 15th St cycletrack would actually be maintained.

ParticipantA Google Reverse Image Search using his Strava profile pic identifies him and his employer in downtown DC (via LinkedIn). It should be easy for someone to send him a note should they wish.
His LinkedIn profile claims he is “extremely helpful” and has “strong crisis management skills.” So, should be an easy conversation!!

Just in case any cyclists are confused by jrenaut’s use of slang: for obscure historical reasons, the auxiliary stopping/standing (ASS) lanes in Columbia Heights are occasionally referred to as “bike lanes.”

I was impressed by how many other commuters were out.
Wish I was among you!
I have a houseguest so commuted in by Metro with him today. It was my first non-bike commute since November. Oops. It was a sad reminder of why I finally gave up on Metro. We left my apartment in downtown Silver Spring at 8:10 and he was still late for his 9:30 meeting in Foggy Bottom. On the plus side, that’s slightly more than twice as fast as walking.

So thoughtful of them to provide toys for buzzed/baked customers. Looks like an easy place to overdo it.
No such fun for me today. But, I did get a chocolate hazelnut donut and a coffee at Paul in Bethesda. That place is dangerously placed right at the Bethesda end of the CCT to tempt tired trail runners & riders. The donut was OK but not especially fresh — I may have been too late in the day. Still, it disappeared quickly.

ParticipantAlso: 20 miles? I hope we can schedule a pee break. I suggest the alley behind a certain presidential-themed hotel that used to be a post office.

ParticipantI also plan to join — sounds like a great time!

ParticipantA prof of mine in college was a retired Marine colonel. I recall him griping one day, “I’ve been divorced and I’ve been shot at, and moving is worse than both.”

I find that for the few handlebar-mounted unfocused fusion reactors that are a problem (most lights don’t bother me), raising my left hand with arm extended blocks the excessive light while allowing me to see the trail and any ninjas that might be present.
This has the advantage of signaling that the oncoming light is too bright without getting steamed about it.

Some people are self-righteous about their pet peeves rather than recognize them for what they are!

I’m usually up early enough, just prefer to avoid all human interaction until at least 11:00. As Sartre should have said, hell is other people at breakfast.
