If you were running Strava, can you check for a flyby by a guy named “Mark aka Gear Crusher”? If you think it’s him, we know who he is, and it might be time for a chat before he kills somebody.

See the discussion on this thread from February:

There are not many details in this article [WaPo], but the cyclist involved has been charged in the case. It’s unclear how serious the charges are (“disobeying a traffic device”). The article states that more charges could be on the way.

I had a nice quiet trail this morning. Wonder where all the cyclists went?

BAFS may need to be extended year-round to keep some of us, ahem, off the metro

The Martin Olav Sabo bike/pedestrian bridge on the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis is pretty cool. It’s hard to capture on camera because of the way it curves, but here’s one view:

    And another:

About a mile up the trail from the bridge, Freewheel Bikes is accessible only from the trail level (the trail is below ground level):

One GREAT thing about that trail is that there are separate lanes for bikes and peds, which makes it much less stressful and safer for everyone.

You have been a really fun group to follow. Definitely one of the two teams with highest social capital. My loss that I wasn’t able to infiltrate any of your events, but I hope to catch some of you at a Proteus ride one of these weekends.

    Nice work.

    Cool.

As a Midwesterner my greatest fear is troubling others.

I had a long ride planned for early this week but had to cancel due to the snow. And, I’m working from home this entire week and not getting my usual commute in. So sad for BAFS Team 5!

So, I would like to do the 59-mi version of VASA instead of the 31 (I registered for 31). Anyone know if they’ll happily hand me the 59-mile cue sheet if I show up at the early roll-out time on Sunday morning or if they insist that riders stick to the ride they registered for?

I don’t really expect anyone to deal with this, but it’s worth noting: weather data from the College Park observation station has been unavailable for a few days on the NWS website (link). The result seems to be that no temperature data is being passed to the scoreboard for rides that begin in my area of Silver Spring, and probably for many other MoCo riders, too. At least, I think this is is what’s going on for the rides below.

This is somewhat sad, because some cold ride days are ahead (and because I’m doing well in the Freeze Points competition…)

I hope to join — this is a great way to celebrate an impressive achievement! It depends how late I stay up on Friday finishing a script that needs to run flawlessly on Saturday…. and did I mention that I’m not a programmer….

Yeah, he’s got three lanes his direction, and I’m not in any of them.

I often use a 1/2 mile portion of Beach Drive to get between my neighborhood and the stretch of Rock Creek Trail that goes northbound from the DC border (toward Lake Needwood). It’s a quiet part of Beach Drive (most people get on or off at West Beach Drive near Silver Spring), and I am almost always going against the main traffic flow and at slightly odd hours. About half the time, not a single car passes me. This doesn’t stop the occasional driver going the other direction from giving me a disapproving gesture or honk of reproach for slightly delaying some vehicle that exists only in their head.

Most drivers on that stretch are pretty courteous though.

That is another good suggestion of a place to look. The distance from Metro somewhat helps the affordability issues over there. :)

Yes, I have this vision of moving out somewhere along the Canal and buying a fat bike in case we ever get a real winter again.
