Many of us who bike from Silver Spring to downtown cut through Chevy Chase and pick up the Capital Crescent Trail in Bethesda. This is a great ride, especially if you have a bit of extra time.

A second trail option is to take Wise Road through Rock Creek Park to Oregon Ave, then turn left on the paved bike trail through the woods and follow that down to Georgetown via Ridge Road.

Finally, you could take the 14th St bike lane and 15th St cycletrack to P Street and head into Georgetown from there. Lots of options!

My negative experiences using filtering: attempting to pass a line of cars stopped in traffic on M Street in Georgetown, the passenger in one of the cars decided that NOW was the time they wanted to disembark, and I nearly got doored as a result.

I got doored precisely this way.

Is there a place to hide this?

Infrared (invisible) flash. Motion detection. Will capture video clips w/ audio (but capturing audio might be a bad idea for legal reasons). $110. Accepts 6xAA batteries and up to 32 GB SD card.

This whole experiment is wonderfully chaotic. Personally, If I were an aspiring dockless bikeshare magnate, I would have started in Japan.

Well, either the Jump e-bikes are being heavily used or they are running into issues. Only six are available at the moment, and the nearest is 3.5 mi. away. Too bad. They sound like a lot of fun. Plus, I was hoping to avoid showing up to happy hour tonight dripping sweat.

edit: I guess people can pay to reserve/hold the bikes, so maybe some of them are being held, too.

The new Beach Drive closure seems to have greatly increased the amount of traffic on 14th St between about Military Road and Arkansas. A lot of cars now want to turn from 14th St onto Arkansas, and it was a bit of a mess.

I have two main routes to get into the city from Silver Spring: 1) down 14th and 2) GBT –> CCT. The former is my “fast” route, and usually takes me 35-40 minutes to go 8 miles through the city. The latter is my “nice” route, and takes me around 55 minutes to go 14 miles through the woods. It seems like my fast route is no longer so fast (took me 52 minutes today), at least not at rush hour, so I guess I’ll be a regular on the Totally Unofficial Chevy Chase Neighborhood GBT Detour .

Edit: I should add that I was also delayed this morning by the White House grounds closure and impassable traffic near the IMF/World Bank, so pretty much walked my bike the last half-mile. Nice morning, fortunately!

Based on the pictures I see weekly on Strava, the Silver Spring coffee club on Tuesdays attracts a good crowd. I bet some of those folks would have suggestions and would be delighted to have you stop by. 7am-ish at Kaldi’s Social House near downtown, I believe. It tends to wrap up on the early side so people can commute into DC.

Thanks for posting! I will definitely check out at least a couple of those.

I just ordered a new bike- and climate-themed book that looks promising: A Hole in the Wind: A Climate Scientist’s Bicycle Journey Across the United States.

Incidentally, with the change in government in Uttar Pradesh, the cycle tracks are likely to be demolished. Already, motorcycles are using them with impunity in some spots. They were a pet project of the previous chief minister, and so there is not really an organized constituency to defend them.

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/lucknow/yogi-government-to-demolish-akhileshs-cycle-tracks/articleshow/58252609.cms

LUCKNOW: The Yogi Adityanath government is all set to demolish bicycle tracks at stretches where these are hampering traffic movement or have narrowed down the existing roads.

The previous Akhilesh government had constructed over 100km of bicycle track in Lucknow and Noida while it had planned to build another 270 km elsewhere in UP.

“If the cycle tracks are hampering the smooth flow of traffic and narrowing down the roads, they would be done away with,” urban development minister Suresh Khanna told TOI. However, he said that officials were yet to return with a report after reviewing the project…

You can get a DUI for drunk bicycling. Then presumably they take away your driver’s license, forcing you to bike more.

I suppose the judge could order a cyclist not to ride while legally intoxicated, and hold them in contempt of court if they did. The judge could order that a breathalyzer lock-out be attached to their Garmin.

Doesn’t Strava Premium have a field for BAC?

Saw the article on Twitter today and dislike the misleading headline as I think very few people would equate “being charged” with what has really happened thus far which is, “received a traffic citation.”

Good point. I adopted the language of the article without really thinking about it.

The lack of details on the incident make it difficult to discuss without ungrounded speculation, so I’ll refrain from even trying.
