In 24 months I’ve logged in excess of 10,000 miles by commuting 30 miles each day 3.5 days a week from Sterling to Tysons in an ELF. Fortunately I met my goal without injury or incident and consuming roughly the same amount of time as commuting by car in rush hour traffic.

Twice I’ve crossed the river and each time it was a metric century effort. (Yes the ELF fits through the Memorial Bridge tunnel!)

This experiment worked so well I plan to continue to combine exercise with commuting.

Fair warning: I’m building my own pedaling contraption which when it debuts on the W&OD is sure to horrify some and amuse others because it won’t look like a bicycle or a car (or a pizza cutter).

So what was the pedaling contraption? I have not seen the ELF in years. Maybe SolarBikeCar has retired to IDAHO!

Maybe I’ve just become desensitized to road rage after all these years, but that incident didn’t sound that bad. Not excusing the behavior, but it could have been much worse. Good on you for not retaliating.

If we want to creep that far, I’d also love to have all the root heaves just south of Wilson fixed up, too.

Those root heaves are off the hook. I considered ordering custom yard signs saying “Free Vasectomy Ahead”, “All Terrain Vehicles Only”, “Have Your Dentist’s # Handy”, “Helmet Buckled?”, “Hold On Tight”, “Secure Loose Change Now”, “Who Needs Bouncy Castles”, “Bend Those Knees, Please!”, etc. Still may do it :)

I haven’t even been able to begin to process this. On one hand I feel like I barely knew him, and on the other he undoubtedly made me a better person. Every singe time I’ve had what could have been a bad interaction with an inattentive driver but instead turned out well, it’s been because I was able to channel Pete’s positive vibes. I hear his voice in my head ALL THE TIME when I’m riding my bike, and every time it nudges me in a better direction.

I’m stuck on my fixie this week while my Bianchi is in the shop and coming home from a work errand, I rode it up the biggest hill in the neighborhood in Pete’s honor.

This photo he took after a 2015 Friday Coffee Club is particularly hard but I’m really glad I have it.

Thanks for posting. This is a lovely picture but now it just makes me so sad to look at it. Better and happier times.

Those of you who participated in the King and Queen of the Trail Freezing Saddles competition two years ago our participated in one of the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail cleanups will be pleased to know that Virginia passed legislation this year allowing municipalities to impose a 5 cent plastic bag fee. EcoAction Arlington has launched a petition to ask Arlington County to adopt an ordinance imposing this fee.

    The petition is available here.

You’ve probably noticed lots of plastic waste on the trails and the nearby water ways. A bag fee would have a profound impact on reducing plastic pollution. DC’s program led to an 80% reduction in plastic bag pollution while also providing funding towards the goal of making the Anacostia River swimmable and fishable. For the first two years, retailers would receive 2 cents of each fee. After 2023, retailers would receive 1 cent of each fee.

I appreciate folks signing the petition. I’m also writing to my legislators in Alexandria and requesting that they adopt a bag fee ordinance.

Wonderful news! The cleanup pointless prize was probably my favorite of all time. Super fun to do with friends and major impact to our beautiful trail system!

Hi Fulton. Are the street signs at Marshall/Meade and Marshall/110 the Arlington colors, black on white? Did someone in NPS actually confirm that this is their land? I called an NPS contact this evening and read him the above description of the location, and based on what you wrote he said your initial instinct was correct…that this road is Arlington County’s land. He said he once had to get Arlington’s permission to transport a heavy truckload for NPS on that very road. He said a lot of people are confused since it runs between monuments.

(But if your NPS person is taking responsibility and has agreed to fix the pothole, then great, they’re welcome to fix it!)

The street sign is black letters in white background. Would have taken a pic this morning, but I was running late.

On a tangential note, I noticed that the last few issues of Bicycling magazine (paper copy) have made a concerted effort to bring some different stories to their publication than their standard. I will say that the last issues featured some really compelling articles and was one of their few I’ve read cover to cover. The reality is that not every cyclist is a Pinarello riding weight weenie that is only interested in UCI races or the best high end gear. I hope Bicycling continues this focus on bringing real, interesting, and diverse articles into their mainstream publication. [reference, the last Bicycling magazine featured an article on a very talented indigenous cyclist who discussed some of the controversy around the ride name]

Thanks for sharing Henry. Rough timing though since I’ve noticed an uptick in use of the Bluemont Junction Trail since the closure of all the metro stations west of Ballston. Same kind of synergy we are having with 66 West construction work concurrent with limited shuttle service in lieu of metro. Surely Arlington and Fairfax are coordinating infrastructure master plan schedules?

You will LOVE Di2 and rue the days you ride anything else. I’ve had Di2 since the earliest iteration and I can’t say enough good things about it. And I have “D-Fly” modules on all of them, which I also recommend. I haven’t yet done any of the “auto shifting” setups but I like that they are an option. Plus it’s great to see what gear you’re in, exact percent of battery remaining, and you can program your shifters to do whatever you want them to do. The “extra” shifters on the top of the hoods on my Tarmac are programmed to control screens on my Garmin.

But most importantly, that is a beautiful bike!!! Enjoy!

You could “explain back” to the ACPD that they’re in murky territory jurisdiction-wise on that road. :) That’s my normal commute route and I’ve only ever seen JBMHH (Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall) cops patrolling there. It is a nasty pothole. Usually not a problem to take the lane, moving downhill at a good clip. Hard for anyone to argue you’re impeding traffic.

I’ll try that next time. On a side note, I rode it yesterday morning, there was a car behind tailgating me who hit the pothole hard, I dodged. Their windows were open and I heard them cursing. So gratifying; it made my morning :)

Careful if you ride down Marshall Drive (the downhill that goes from the back gate of Fort Meyer, where Meade Street ends, along the cemetery and Netherlands Carillon and Iwo Jima Memorial) to Route 110. Very deep and long pothole.

I contacted Arlington, which informed me that it’s NPS jurisdiction. I called NPS and reported it. Fingers crossed that they fix it soon.

It’s a doozy and at this location only taking the full lane is remotely safe. Just waiting for an Arlington cop to give me my annual ticket and mansplainy lecture :)
