ParticipantGood news indeed! Glad you’re going to heed the doctor’s advice.

Update on getting hit with a car.
Good news from the doctor, likely just bad bruising and strain injuries.
Bad news from the doctor, he wants me to take it easy for a few days, so I’m not going to do much more than to and fro work for mileage. Hopefully will get a longer ride in this weekend.rolo

Could the first people in tomorrow morning please post early reports? It sounds like it could be either very bad or just fine.
The W&OD from Sterling Road to Buckthorn Lane were very doable with slicks this morning. There were a few small patches of ice that required me to slow from my already slower-than-usual pace, but overall it wasn’t bad. When I left Sterling this morning, it was 35°. It’s now 32° in Reston and I suspect it will continue to drop as the day progresses. There were a few wet puddles that will turn to ice if the wind doesn’t dry them up soon.

Participantdkel, I have a size 44 Northwave Celsius Artic GTX Mountain Bike Shoe if you’re interested. Bought them last year with a pair of 43’s. Kept the 43s (which are AWESOME), but couldn’t send back the 44s since they had 40 miles of wear on them. Let me know if you’re interested.

ParticipantMine is the last two syllables of my last name. For some reason, some of my childhood friends had difficulty pronouncing my last name, Varuolo (the u is silent), so rolo was appointed to me as a nickname.

ParticipantI’m planning on being there!

Was disappointed that there was no Vienna stop (where I was registered) or Reston Town Center. Pleasant ride, though, so I shouldn’t complain.

Spokes and Vienna Bikes were in the Wholefoods parking lot. Stopped and got my T-shirt. I was surprised the number of cyclists on the trail this morning. Difficult Run was an sight to behold this morning, wasn’t it?

Nice to meet you dkel and Lena. Loved seeing eminva’s nice “new” bike, as well as the randoguy’s VO and that sweet Gunnar out there too! Thanks to GB and GuyContinental for the pulls back to Arlington as well – always a pleasure riding with polite and considerate trail users! Great turn out with dcv and hozn there as well.
It was great to finally meet you as well! Look forward to many more Thursday morning coffee clubs in the future.

Was she rocking her new shiny, Hozen-built wheels?
Not yet – Hopefully next week! Darn job is keeping me from picking them up at a reasonable hour.

ParticipantFalls Church -> Reston via W&OD
I got on the trail close to Shreve Road which was snow blown all the way to Sandburg. Some icy spots, but easily doable with studs.
Sandburg to Gallows – had a line of packed snow
Gallows to Maple – for the most part it was tough going. about 20% was packed snow with the rest a combination of loose snow and ice. It sucks when you lose momentum.
Crossing Maple – nice mound of snow blocking the trail which was a blast to go over!
Maple to Ayr Hill – packed snow and ice
Ayr Hill to Hunter Mill – for about 1/2 the way, there was a path of packed snow and ice with spots of ice ruts. Easily doable with studs. Then the packed snow and ice disappeared and you are left with icy ruts and frozen snow. Still, not bad with studs.
Hunter Mill to Buckthorn – Yeah, pretty much untouched. Did see 2 fat tire bike tracks. Snow is about 6 inches here. Tough going until the hill right before Buckthorn – sledding made the snow nice and packed here – easily traversable. Some photos from the morning ride:

I think I saw Rolo westbound on the WOD in Vienna this morning. Definitely saw Bilsko, amazed at how far away he spotted me at closing speeds.
That was me, half asleep. I believe I spotted you this morning as well. Sorry I didn’t say hi. By the time I realized it was you, you had sped by.

Think I saw Lena just east of Lee Hwy around 4:45 today. Orange Gunnar?
Then after an emergency pit at Bikenetic, caught up with culimerc on West St.
That was me enjoying the lovely evening. Hope to meet you tonight at the Happy Hour so I can put a face to a name and say hi next time!
