ParticipantDoes this mean I’m going to slip on frozen pickle juice tomorrow?

ParticipantThey even ventured onto the MVT! I was not pleased. I just got my snow bike set up Sunday and am rarin’ to ride the ice craters. [Searching for the tongue-in-cheek emoticon. This is an exciting advancement]

ParticipantFor those of us slumming it on the W&OD—no brine there, I’m sure—how will an inch of snow early in the day affect the afternoon ride? Surely the early snow will get trodden on all day, and freeze further into an unpredictable, icy mess, right? So I should put on my new studded tires that have been waiting patiently by my bike for the past month and a half, right?
Right?

It’s that or I just pretend there is no snow and ride my fixie on its 25s. It’s win-win, really.
Truthfully, I think I’ll ride my heavy commuter, but not change out the tires. Sometimes simpler is better.

ParticipantHow far did they brine the MVT?
I’ve never heard of brining before. Up north, they only threw sand and salt on the roads ahead of time.

ParticipantThey also brined the trail between 110 and the cemetery. Plus it has the benefit of being slightly reflective when the bike lights shine on it.

Was pretty well brined out by Banneker Park as of 6pm…even the overpass at Potomac St. was sprayed.

I mean the slums of the W&OD, you know, outside Arlington.

They didn’t brine the MVT, just the access at 4MR and the connector from the Roosevelt Island parking lot up to the Intersection of Doom! (Lynn St and Lee Highway). 4MR Trail was brined from the MVT to Shirlington Rd, don’t know if the did it any further west since I switched over to the non-brined W&OD there. The W&OD was brined from the Custis Trail intersection to at least the access to Madison Manor (milepost 4.5) which probably continued at least as far as EFC Park.

The closest I ever got to a really bad accident was driving through eastern Washington in a pretty bad snow storm. The road, although not well traveled, was plowed and mostly just wet, but I eventually hit a county line at the crest of a hill and the road went from basically clear to covered in 4 inches of wet snow with some compacted ice underneath. Needless to say, that had a dramatic effect on my vehicle and I ended up spinning into a ditch, none the worse for wear. I can only assume that the plows just stopped at the first county line and the second county hadn’t gotten around to plowing by the time I drove through.
Anyway, now that Arlington is clearing the trails, I can imagine something similar happening at the ArlCo/FFX border.
