Participantrolling closure of the Beltway
I have spent enough hours on the beltway going speeds much less than bikes speed. Not exactly one my list of utopian bike routes.

ParticipantConsider Phoenix Bikes in Four Mile Run and Velocity Bikes in Alexandria Del Ray. Both sell used bikes. Both are community organizations. If you have $500 in your pocket, you might be able to buy a better bike that is used.
I generally shop at REI. I have heard this refrain from several people – the REI folk are excellent about talking to you. If you go in with a question, you will get a 20 minute answer. They have a good inventory.
I own a Cannondale Badboy that is a hybrid. I love it. First I love it because it is huge. Second, I love it because it is a city bike that can take a beating. Road bikes are for speed – and if you are confident of your surface – cool. I want a flat handlebar with powerful brakes and everything right on my hands. I want slightly larger tires than road bike tires (but not mountain bike tires). Sometimes these are called urban bikes. Less of a “hybrid” (you can put road or mountain bike tires on it) and more of a bike built for demanding city driving.

ParticipantSame answer as always.
What do you want to use it for?
Me, I am a commuter. I want shoes I can walk into the office or into a store with. I recently bought Pearl Izumi X-Alp Seek IV Bike Shoes amd have tremendously liked them. No, they are not a full walking shoe; but they are good enuf if you are not doing that much walking. No they are not a stiff bike shoe you would use for centuries; i don ride centuries. This is a good hybrid that lets me do enough walking around to cheat it. And yes, they are a bit wide. One thing, they are lace shoes. The laces tuck into a little pocket in the tongue of the shoe so they do disappear but otherwise you wood knot opt for laces on a bike shoo.

ParticipantI propose a group ride from my office to the FroYo in Shirlington after work!
Sorta the diff between racers and commuters: Monday is the first day of biking for commuters and the weekends are the days “off.”

I live a sad, sad life, because I really really want this…
Thankfully, my commuter dreams are fulfilled, but the little roadie in me really wants this…thankfully, my covetousness is relatively modest.
Oh Oh! So do I! Any raging opinions on the street????? I am looking at the Hound About Trailer.
One problem I am having is how to attach it / hitch it to my bike. With a pannier rack on my urban bike, there is not much room for a hitch. Thus I am thinking of buying a simple road bike so that I can go on rides with my dog. A regular in the forum promises me I wont blow out my knees.

ParticipantMy weekend was worse! I missed both my Saturday and my Sunday ride.

ParticipantDoes commuting on the Custis count as a group ride?

ParticipantThis from Velocity bikes
We rescheduled our Ice Cream Ride because of that rain we had. We are ON for Saturday the 21st.
I recommend looking at the Velocity FB page for updates. If you are on FB, you can add the event.

I wont be able to go on the 21st.

ParticipantI buy ’em cheap, brake them, and buy another pair. And agreed with above, I buy clear safety glasses from the hardware store for clear glass night riding.

ParticipantThere is a FB page for the ride. If you are coming, you can let them know. I am planning on it. It sounds like too much fun – and I have never been to Velocity… would like to check it out. Hopefully will have replicant with me.

ParticipantScraper Bike!
The bicyclists who weaves all over the road in front of motorists is asking for trouble. He confuses the motorists. And he acts as though he might be confused himself.
Scraper bike!

ParticipantAs always Dirt, you were just faster getting there than the rest of us

ParticipantCongratulations!!!
We went to one car probably 5 years ago. We live in N Arlington on a decent bus run, can schlep to the metro (about a mile), and have a zipcar membership. Mainly, I bike.
We have saved an insane amount of money. And by saved, I mean I never see it as it all vanishes into the dark hole known as a 529.
The only condition? Can you and your spouse play nicely? It requires logistical planning, and not scheduling conflicting car demands. Google Calendars for the family calendar is very good for this – every can see it and add to it, everyone can have their own calendar / color – and hopefully the family can be coordinated. Some couples can, others (like the men out their who drive useless sports cars) cant.
