One thing to note is that the Strava API will truncate ride titles if they run over a certain character amount. So if you get super-duper creative with your ride titles and go long, a hashtag may be omitted.
(I’ve noticed this with HubTiger, an app/service that also scrapes ride names from Strava.)
randomduckParticipantGaiter is outside my budget, alas.

Back in December, March 21 seemed like the best date by far – based on innumerable phonecalls and emails to try and work around vacations, school schedules, and observance days of all faiths… it seemed like most everyone could make it. Now it may be the day on which almost nobody can make it. Eeek!
I’ll make it, regardless, as Bier Baron is a short walk from my flat.
But if it moves to a Wednesday in April, it’s a no-go for me, as the Downtown Breakaway ride will be back in full swing and that’s my jam on Wednesday nights until first week of September. So I hope it remains tomorrow night.
And I’m guessing that BB will be open during the storm. Most bars are, and it’s worth remembering that the place is also an active hotel, so some staff will be there regardless.

randomduckParticipantSince I didn’t mention my whips:
Most days: a 2008 Pedal Force ZX-3 carbon road bike.
One days most foul: a 1997 Marin Indian Fire Trail aluminum hardtail mountain bike.
Awaiting a frame repair: a 2006 Jamis Eclipse steel & carbon road bike.
randomduckParticipantHi there! I’m Rudi, originally from Salt Lake City, then a decade in New England, and now 15 years here in the District.
I’m a bike commuter on weekdays (approximately 10.5-11 miles per day, round trip), and an alpine ski racing coach on weekends. Thus, my weekend riding/eventing potential is not that great. But I should contribute solid base numbers to the team, any way you look at it.
Last year I managed around 3,700 miles, which is low for me. That said, I coached all winter and had my hip replaced in May, which kept me off the bike for 7.5 weeks. I also started a new job in September which had me working most weekends for a while, though that’s settled down a bit… and been replaced by the skiing, so what can you do?
Sorry I missed the opening happy hour last night, but I had a previous engagement. C’est la vie. Hope to see all of you on the road – whee!
randomduckParticipantHope to make it to FFC I (i.e. the one at A Baked Joint) to pick up a couple of pulls. I’m seldom there early enough, but I hope to make it there next Friday to buy a couple.
Can’t make the opening HH due to a prior commitment, even though it’s quite literally in my neighborhood.

Yes, I know. I’m not formally a part of this team. I’m just stalking. Cause I can.
Oooooooh – stalker.
Hmmmm. Guess I’ll need to wear my clean kit when I ride from now on…
randomduckParticipantHowdy, Team 19!
Or “Hey Nineteen” – a theme song! Steely Dan! Woot!
Ahem.
Hi there! I’m Rudi, this is my second Freezing Saddles (first was last year). I’m a Utah native, spent a decade in Connecticut, then moved to DC in early 2003.
I live in DC, a stone’s throw from Bier Baron. Why was I not there last night, you ask? Because I’m also an alpine ski racing coach and have training every Tuesday and Thursday evening throughout the winter at Liberty Mountain, Pennsylvania (not to mention the weekend training and racing duties). So while y’all were enjoying hoppy beverages, I was on the side of a mountain, trying to shape the future of ski racing in the United States (or at least make sure my athletes didn’t kill themselves by defying the laws of physics), and steeling myself for a drive back through freezing rain (it wasn’t too bad as these things go).
I do quite a bit of riding in and around the greater DC area. I love long rides with long climbs and fast descents, but really: if I’m on a bike, I’m a happy fella. I an the former chair of Potomac Pedalers, and lead a series of summer rides for them, the “Downtown Breakaway” (every Wednesday evening from the beginning of April until the first week of September). I co-lead a Wednesday night winter ride on the C&O Canal Towpath called “Lights! Gravel! Action!” in association with District Cycle Works. I’ve Coffeeneured for the past handful of years, and have also participated in the Errandonnée. I also help lead bike tours for The Bluemont Connection during the warmer months.
My winter cycling goal is to simply ride when I can. My weekends are chock-a-block full of ski racing duties, as are my weeknights. My weekdays have a lot of freelance work, as well as searching for a full-time job with health benefits (hey, gotta be honest here). But there’s plenty of room to get rides in here and there.
I’m also bracing for total hip replacement surgery in early April – my #projectfemur repair is degrading, and I need to fix things soon. If anything, the bike makes it easier for me to get around with my wobbly hip. My yearly mileage goal is somewhat amorphous: get in as many quality miles as I can before surgery, then see what happens afterward. I know that the bike – either on an indoor trainer or outdoors – will be an essential part of my rehabilitation. I managed almost 4,200 miles in 2016 with my ski racing and hip surgery downtimes, so we’ll see what 2017 brings.
I look forward to meeting those of you I haven’t met before – perhaps a team happy hour or coffee klatsch is in order….
Mmmmm, beer. Mmmmm, coffee.
December 27, 2016 at 6:31 am in reply to: Freezing Saddles Welcome Happy Hour — meet your teammates! #1062187randomduckParticipantEven though I should be there, as it’s almost literally at my front door, Tuesday evenings are ski coaching evenings for me. So I’ll miss another FS launch happy hour.
Such is the life of an alpine skiing coach: always on snow in the winter (and thus always a boat anchor for the FS team I’m on).

I’ll be out of town that weekend, up on a ski hill in New Hampshire. So I’ll toast from Schilling Brewery – does that work for y’all?
randomduckParticipantSorry for my boat anchor status in the team. The ski season has wreaked havoc on my bike time, to say the least.
randomduckParticipantI suggested something not-really-genteel on the tweetie earlier: 💩
But that’s not what I think of my glorious team. I’m just lacking ideas that aren’t obvious copies from The Rules™ or something similar.
Happy to be part of this team, even if I may be a boat anchor at times due to my ski coaching responsibilities (i.e. the paying job).
