ParticipantSo… have I missed the conversation about the where/when of the wrap party/awards/more drinking fest?

This pointless prize is still not on the leadership, as of Day 25. It shows up only under the hashtag.
I was wondering that myself. O BAFS website tabulation deities: what’s the answer here?

So, does my loop count? I approached it from the north point, continued riding to the south entry, made a loop, and headed to Virginia.
https://www.strava.com/activities/8429537576Yes, that should count. As long as it’s the full loop, done in one crack and not doing the first half, riding on, then doing the second half, it’s good.

ParticipantSo is it absolutely necessary as someone ([cough]Boomer[cough]) suggested to post your pix here?
I have hashtagged my Strava posts. I’ve even created a Flickr album where I’ll put all my BAFS Socks 2023 pix.
Here are a few from the first month of BAFSsing:

More at the Flickr link – I’m doing different socks for pretty much every BAFS ride.

To prevent double-dipping, you could modify this to count the number of times a participant does both the Ross Drive Up and Over and the Beach Dr. – Police Station to Broad Branch segments, similar to how the Loopy for Arlington competition works.
Suuuuure: try and make it easier for those Virginia folk to take the southern approach.
That’s certainly an option, but it’s a little tougher to figure out a pure loop as a RCP ride could do the Ridge-Ross ascent, then continue up Beach Drive for a while, turn around, descend Beach and technically complete the loop, albeit not in a contiguous motion. That complicates scoring the loop I intended to have for the competition. I’m fine with folks approaching it from the north (as originally intended) or the south (as Virginia asked for), but it should be a contiguous loop – and linking the two sections might not work in this way.

ParticipantSteve O: I included a south starting version in an edit of the intro post.
That said: there’s a kind of poetry to having it start at the north. Who says these loops need to be convenient? :p

ParticipantObviously some weird gravity issues in Falls Church last night…

ParticipantHappy to sponsor a prize for a loop that has some climbing, leafless trees, NPS Rangers, and moss-on-pavement. Living in Dupont Circle this loop is a regular part of my training regimen.
I am basically a weekday-only rider as I coach alpine ski racing and my weekends are basically spoken for through the end of March. I’ll be working primarily on base miles to enter the 2023 event season with good fitness. On racing travel weekends I’ll be on Zwift (sadly) just to keep the legs sharp.
I hope to meet the members of the team as BAFS goes along. Happy hours are a specialty.

ParticipantHappy to be part of this group of perfectly well adjusted crazy folk!

Code is done, it is in a queue to hopefully get pushed up to the site so should be safe to ride without tags. If not, we can always pull results from the database at the end.
Many thanks! 😎

ParticipantSorry to hear you’re having issues with your Edge Explore.
If it’s the first generation model it is no longer supported by Garmin so any firmware updates would be dated. That said: make sure the computer’s firmware is as up-to-date as can be.
The next thing you’ll want to do is delete older activities from the computer. There’s a finite amount of storage space on older Garmins and when they get close to full they will often freeze, have read/write errors to memory, etc. So it’s good to regularly clear out older rides and activities to keep storage space open for the computer to use.
Otherwise the best bet may be to restore the unit to factory settings and carry on from there.
For what it’s worth: the newer generation Garmins have more storage space and faster chips. And while some folks tout Wahoo and Hammerhead as superior options, they’re not without their faults, either. It’s tech: it has issues.

Is there a reason you’re recording this prize by using hashtags instead of using the Strava segments? For example, the Hains Point prize does by segment, as does the Arlington Loop prizes. A few years ago, there was the POGGIO competition, riding up Ross Drive, that didn’t require a hashtag.
The big drawback of using a hashtag is that multiple loops in a single ride would only count once. There were a few of using doing the POGGIO many times in a single ride for a spirited competition. The IT geniuses behind the FS back-end should be able to help set this up using the segment.
I have no problem with that becoming the standard if the IT wizards can get it sorted out. It’s my first Pointless Prize and I’m a sometimes participant in BAFS (yay, ski coaching career) and never having been in the running for a Pointless Prize I’ve never taken a deep dive into how the ones using Strava segments are tallied.

ParticipantPossible location for the final HH and awards ceremony, Steve O: Metrobar
It has plentiful outdoor seating (basically all outdoor seating) and is situated adjacent to the MBT.
