ParticipantIf you’re still looking, Bikenetic has some Innova studded tires that are cheaper than many I’ve seen. The tag says 45mm, but they look narrower.

ParticipantBarring a couple of slushy bumps, the W&OD between Falls Church and Gallows is clear. There are mean winds while going up Gallows to Tysons.
If the trail freezes tonight, I might be mad.

ParticipantSo, this happened:

(Had to hike 2 miles to Spokes because my fingers froze trying to put the crankarm back on.

ParticipantThe W&OD between Falls Church and Vienna is pretty navigable if you have chubby tires, but there were a few slushy patches that promise to turn into ice overnight. Past Vienna going towards Reston, there are patches of ice, but nothing too bad. I went on a sheet of ice that crunched beneath me. SO satisfying. Like bubble wrap under my tires.

How about Team One, we spent more time on our name today than actually riding.
Team One time at band camp!

ParticipantWhy not.
174 as of 1/3/14. Target: Less than that.

ParticipantRiding in from East Falls Church, as americancyclo mentions – packed icy footprints. If you ride on the gravelly bits adjoining the trail, however, it’s wonderful soft powdery snow.
Going up Gallows to Tysons, the bike lane’s ok-ish, but the wind. Gorblimey that WIND. And with my luck it’ll be a headwind going back, too.

ParticipantGo team ONE!
I almost made it to happy hour, except my feetses got cold, and the pajamas beckoned.
Phatboing
ParticipantI intend to make a serious, honest attempt to be there. The ride from work to the venue goes past home, so I may give in to the temptation to sit in my pyjamas and dream.

ParticipantGet a Fargo! It will not disappoint. Here are things I’ve done with mine so far:
– set it up as a heavy commuter, for carrying random crap around because you gotta use all racks, right?
– rode it from Pittsburgh to DC
– got knocked about on the mtb trails
– put on a suspension and fat tires and got less knocked about on the mtb trailsIf you commute on th w&od between Tysons and EFC, you’ve likely seen me on this machine at least once.
In all these scenarios, the main finding is that the bike is limited only by its squidgy engine.

ParticipantMy cheapskate-ish layers, which I’m rather happy with, if it helps anyone:
Top:
Base: Light wool+acrylic blend sweater (free, mooched from my mum)
Heat-trapping device: The shell layer from an LL Bean Storm Chaser jacket ($80 when I got it on sale)Bottom:
Base: Army surplus polypropylene pants ($17 or so)
Outer: REI Outdoor pants ($30 during a member sale)Hands:
Pearl Izumi lobster gloves (got em at closeout for $30)Feet:
Hiking shoes that are a bit big + 3 layers of socks (wool liners from REI + wool blend hiking socks from Costco. COSTCO! + LL Bean neoprene socks)Head:
LL Bean balaclavaTricked out thus, I’m almost too warm some days, but if I unzip my shell, I can get enough air circulation going to keep me cool (I generate a LOT of heat).
For my outer layer, I’m going to replace the jacket with one of these: http://www.froggtoggs.com/mens/mens-jackets-all-weather/frogg-toggsr-ultra-lite-rain-jacket.html. The Internet tells me they work as advertised, so should be interesting.

ParticipantThere is some vague talk of rain on Sunday. I assume this is rain or shine, si?
Either way, it seems it’ll be an excellent day to ride.

ParticipantI want to amend my original affirmation.
This is my first Freezing Saddles (though not my first winter in my freezing saddle), so I’m not yet sure I should give a shit about points. For ref, I bike 13 miles a day, at least 5 days a week. Can that get me some non-pointless prizes? Because I could go for some prizes.
Otherwise, count me as slacker, by all means.
Phatboing
ParticipantYes. I’m no slacker, but I’m slackey.
